Hot Shooting Hawks Get Past Women's Hoops 81-50

Saint Joseph's hits over 50 percent from the floor handing UMass road loss.
PHILADELPHIA – Paced by a 52 percent shooting performance and a big third quarter, Saint Joseph's handed the UMass women's basketball team an 81-50 loss on Saturday afternoon at Hagan Arena. Maggie Mulligan led the Minutewomen with 14 points and 10 rebounds to tie her for the NCAA lead with 13 double-doubles this season.

The loss dropped UMass to 7-10 overall and 1-3 in the Atlantic 10 with the Minutewomen scheduled to travel to Davidson on Thursday, Jan. 12 (11:30 a.m.) before hosting Duquesne on Sunday, Jan. 15 (12 p.m.). Sunday's game against the Dukes at the Mullins Center will be televised live nationally on the CBS Sports Network.

Alongside Mulligan, only Hailey Leidel was able to reach double figures in the scoring column as the freshman had 11 points.

The Hawks (4-11, 1-2 A-10) had four players in double figures with Adashia Franklin and Kristalyn Baisden each scoring a game-high 18 points. Franklin also had a double-double with 11 rebounds.

After a slow start offensively, the Minutewomen were able to tie the game 5-5 on a Stiff three-pointer at the 5:46 mark of the first quarter. The Hawks, however, outscored UMass 14-to-6 in the balance of the stanza to build a 19-11 lead to end the stanza.

The second quarter saw the Hawks use another 14-to-6 run late in the period highlighted by a trio of three-pointers in the stretch. Monaghan's deep trey from the near wing at the buzzer gave Saint Joseph's a 40-25 lead at the intermission.

Overall, the three-ball was the advantage for the Hawks who hit 8-of-11 attempts including 4-of-5 in the second quarter compared to just 2-of-5 for the first half by UMass.

A 20-to-2 run by Saint Joseph's in the opening 5:26 of the third quarter put the Hawks ahead 60-27. SJU went into the fourth with a 71-31 lead after hitting 11-of-19 field goals for the period.

UMass was able to execute better in the fourth, outscoring the Hawks 19-10, but the damage had been done.

Overall, Saint Joseph's hit 31-of-59 (52.5 percent) from the floor, while UMass was held to 17-of-53 (32.1 percent). The Hawks also connected on just over 63 percent of their three-point shots hitting 12-of-19 compared to 4-of-14 for the Minutewomen.
