Women’s Hoops Returns Home to Host Rhode Island

After week on the road, Minutewomen back in Mullins Center on Wednesday night.
AMHERST, Mass. – Following a week-long road trip to Florida and Ohio, the UMass women's basketball team returns to the Mullins Center to host long-time Atlantic 10 rival Rhode Island on Wednesday night (7 p.m.). As with all mid-week home games this year, the Mullins Center is featuring its Kids Eat Free promotion for families attending the game.
The action will be streamed online for free through the Atlantic 10 Digital Network. Fans can also listen to the game on 91.1 FM WMUA. Tickets can be purchased by calling 866-UMASS-TIX, logging on to www.UMassAthletics.com or by visiting the Mullins Center Box Office.
UMass (6-9, 0-2 A-10) is coming off a tough loss at Dayton on Saturday afternoon. Despite cutting the Flyers lead to just two points on several occasions in the second half, the Minutewomen were unable to muster enough of a rally late. Maggie Mulligan led the way with 23 points and 10 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season, while Alyx Stiff scored a career-best 15 points and Hailey Leidel had 13 points and seven boards.
As she has all season long, Leidel continues to lead the Minutewomen in scoring with a 16.5 point average, while Mulligan is just behind with 14.1 points and 12.3 rebounds. Ryan Holder rounds out the scoring leaders with 11.3 points a night.
Nationally, Mulligan continues to rank second in the NCAA for double-doubles, just one behind Chantel Osahor of Washington. Her 12.3 rebounds per game is also second in the nation. The junior is the country's second-most improved player in terms of points and rebounds with a +9.0 increase in scoring and a +7.4 increase in rebounds per game.
Leidel continues to rank as the No. 2 rookie scorer in the country behind Nadine Soliman of UNC Greensboro. The freshman ranks third overall in the Atlantic 10 in scoring and leads the league in three-pointers made. Nationally, her 40 three-pointers made is tied for 28th overall.
Rounding out the A-10 leaders, Leah McDerment's 5.3 assists per game ranks third overall, while Ryan Holder ranks 23rd in scoring average and ninth in blocked shots (1.2/game).
The return home figures to be beneficial for the Minutewomen as UMass is 5-1 this year in the friendly confines of the Mullins Center.
Rhode Island enters the game with a 4-10 overall record and a 0-2 mark in league play. Rhody has lost seven straight entering Wednesday night including a pair of A-10 match-ups at St. Bonaventure and at home against Fordham.
Charise Wilson leads the Rams with an 18.7 point per game average and is the only player in double-figures for Rhody this season. Dominique Ward the second-leading scorer at 8.4 points per outing. Ward also leads the Rams in rebounding with a 5.8 board average.
