January 27, 2017 | Hockey
THE BASICS:
RESULT: Maine 4, Massachusetts 1
LOCATION: Alfond Arena (Orono, Maine)
RECORDS: Massachusetts (5-18-2, 2-10-1 HEA); Maine (9-13-3, 3-9-1)
THE LEAD: Two early first period goals helped carry Maine past University of Massachusetts hockey, 4-1 on Friday night at Alfond Arena. The Minutemen saw a potential goal get called back in the opening frame and hit two posts in the loss to the Black Bears.
FIRST PERIOD:
Shortly after UMass' first power play of the night expired, the Black Bears took a 1-0 lead. Daniel Perez shot a puck through traffic off a feed from Robin Hoglund that found its way under netminder Ryan Wischow at the 3:01 mark. Maine then made it a 2-0 margin 8:00 into the period as Nolan Vesey fired home a power-play goal from the top of the left faceoff circle after collecting a pass from Patrick Shea. The Minutemen appeared to have halved their deficit with 4:55 to go in the frame, but senior Marc Hetnik's tally was waived off for goaltender interference.
SECOND PERIOD:
In a scoreless second period, Wischow helped preserve the score in the closing moments, denying Peter Housakos on a shorthanded breakaway attempt. The Black Bears out-shot UMass 10-8 in the second after UMass posted a 13-6 advantage in shots in the first.
THIRD PERIOD:
UMass made it 2-1 just 52 seconds into the third period. Sophomore Brett Boeing won the puck along the wall and sent it up to classmate William Lagesson at the point and Lagesson's shot fluttered through traffic and found its way to the back of the net. The Black Bears regained their two-goal cushion, however, at the 8:33 mark. With a power play chance about to expire, Cedric Lacroix stuffed the puck in at the near post with Vesey collecting an assist on the play. Patrick Shea added an insurance tally 16:19 into the period from Lacroix to complete the scoring at 4-1. UMass hit the post twice in the final stanza, first with 16:50 on the clock by senior Steven Iacobellis and senior Ray Pigozzi on the power play with less than two minutes to go in the game.
FROM COACH CARVEL:
"I thought we played pretty well. I thought the difference in the game was Maine was much better around both nets. I thought in a five-foot radius around the blue paint they were much better than we were, but over the rest of the ice we were probably a little bit better than them tonight. I liked my team's effort and I thought they played really hard for 60 minutes."
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
UP NEXT: UMass and Maine will square off again tomorrow night, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m. in Alfond Arena.
