January 28, 2017 | Hockey
THE BASICS:
RESULT: Maine 2, Massachusetts 1
LOCATION: Alfond Arena (Orono, Maine)
RECORDS: Massachusetts (5-19-2, 2-11-1 HEA); Maine (10-13-3, 4-9-1)
THE LEAD: Despite putting up a season-high 45 shots, University of Massachusetts hockey was edged by Maine, 2-1 in the teams' series finale on Saturday night at Alfond Arena. Junior Jake Horton scored the lone goal of the contest for the Minutemen midway through second period to cut in to the Black Bears' two-goal lead.
FIRST PERIOD:
UMass nearly doubled up Maine in shots in the first, 15-8, and had periods of sustained offensive pressure, but the Black Bears came out of the period with a 1-0 advantage. At the 15:14 mark, Blaine Byron cleaned up his own rebound in the slot off a feed from Cam Brown to put Maine out in front.
SECOND PERIOD:
The Black Bears extended the score to 2-0, 4:32 into the second period. Rob Michel's shot from the top of the right faceoff circle popped in and out of Nic Renyard's glove, dropping into the net, with Brown collecting his second assist of the contest on the play. UMass took one of the goals back at 10:49. Picking up an errant Maine pass on his way out of the penalty box, Horton skated in on a breakaway and snapped the puck past Rob McGovern. The Minutemen narrowly missed tying things up at 2-2, but senior Ray Pigozzi was denied by McGovern who snared his one-timer on a 2-on-1 with 3.9 seconds to go in the period.
THIRD PERIOD:
The Minutemen continued to pepper the Maine net in the third, with 10 shots to the Black Bears' four, but were unable to come up with the equalizer. Renyard went to the bench for an extra attacker with 52 seconds remaining in the period.
FROM COACH CARVEL:
"I thought for 60 minutes our guys were really good. We carried the play, carried the momentum. I thought our power play moved the puck around tremendously well, but still can't find a way to score on the power play. I think it's the reason we can't find ways to win games is because we can't find ways to score on the power play. I thought we did everything we wanted to do tonight, but the one thing we didn't do is make life tough for their goaltender."
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- UMass out-shot Maine, 45-22 on the night and went 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Black Bears were 0-for-2.
- Renyard finished with 20 saves for the Minutemen and McGovern stopped 44 in net for Maine.
- Horton's goal was his second of the season and sixth point of the year.
UP NEXT: UMass will be back in action on Tues., Jan. 31, when the squad will play host to Northeastern at 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
