Women's Hoops Falls in Double-Overtime to George Washington

January 21, 2017 | Women's Basketball

Minutewomen able to take league-leader to pair of OTs, but unable to pull out win late.

AMHERST, Mass. - A valiant effort against the current leader in the Atlantic 10 standings was just short as the UMass women's basketball team fell 60-54 to George Washington in double overtime on Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Center. The Minutewomen led by 15 points after three quarters, but the Colonials were able to rally back in the fourth to force the overtime sessions.

RECORDS:
UMass falls to 9-12 overall and 3-5 in the Atlantic 10, while George Washington improves to 13-6 overall and 6-1 in league play. The Minutewomen will head to La Salle on Wednesday, Jan. 25 for a special Noon tip-off.

UMASS LEADERS:
Alyx Stiff led the Minutewomen with 18 points thanks to a career-best six three-pointers. Hailey Leidel posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while adding nine steals.

GW LEADERS:
Lexi Martins scored a game-high 25 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the Colonials. Hannah Schaible and Kendall Bresee each had nine points to round out George Washington's top scorers.

KEY PLAYS:
• UMass led 47-32 going into the fourth quarter thanks to a 12-to-2 run to start the period which was capped by Megan Burke's second three-pointer of the day.
• Despite ending the stanza with momentum, it proved the final field goal for the Minutewomen in the game as GW outscored UMass 15-0 in the fourth quarter. It looked as if the Colonials may have won the game on a buzzer-beating put-back at the end of regulation, but official review waived the basket forcing overtime.
• Neither team was able to generate any sustained offense in the first OT to force a second bonus period. A Martins jumper with 1:10 left in the second OT put the Colonials up 58-54. UMass had three possessions to try to keep pace, but were unable to convert into points.

NUMBERS GAME:
Both teams struggled from the floor as UMass shot 26.9 percent and George Washington hit just 25.3 percent of its shots. A 58-to-25 advantage on the boards including 30 offensive rebounds for the Colonials allowed GW to control much of the clock late in the game with multiple possessions.

FACT OF THE NIGHT:
The two OT game marked the first time since Dec. 28, 2002 at Florida that the Minutewomen had played in a multiple overtime contest. It was also the fourth multiple overtime game in program history.
