January 20, 2017 | Hockey

THE BASICS:
RESULT: #10 Boston College 6, Massachusetts 1
LOCATION: Kelley Rink at Conte Forum (Chestnut Hill, Mass.)
RECORDS: Massachusetts (5-17-2, 2-9-1 HEA); Boston College (15-9-2, 10-3-1 HEA)

THE LEAD: Three goals in the first period helped carry No. 10 Boston College past the University of Massachusetts hockey team at Kelley Rink on Friday night by a 6-1 margin. Ray Pigozzi provided the lone tally for the Minutemen, which came midway through the second period.

FIRST PERIOD:
Boston College opened the scoring 12:32 into the first when Austin Cangelosi and Chris Brown set up David Cotton for a one-timer at the back post. With the teams skating 4-on-4, Julius Matilla added to the Eagles advantage with his tally from Luke McInnis and Scott Savage from the left faceoff circle at 14:24. Then in the closing seconds of the frame, Cangelosi pushed the score to 3-0, tapping in a feed from Brown and Cotton at 19:55.

SECOND PERIOD:
UMass took one of the goals back 7:53 into the second period. With the teams skating 4-on-4, senior Steven Iacobellis carried an Ivan Chukarov blocked shot up the ice and sent a pass ahead to Pigozzi. Pigozzi then drove his shot home from the top of the faceoff circle for his fifth goal of the season. However, BC regained its three-goal cushion before the period was complete. Brown found Savage alone in front with a pass out of the corner for the strike at 17:02.

THIRD PERIOD:
Boston College notched its fifth goal 57 seconds into the third period on a shot from the point by Michael Kim. JD Dudek, the Eagles' sixth different scorer, added the final tally of the contest at the 16:14 mark.

FROM COACH CARVEL:
"The 6-1 score is pretty lopsided and shots were too, but I didn't mind our effort tonight. I thought our guys competed hard, but our margin for error is extremely thin, especially against skilled teams. I thought that was the case tonight. We had two breakdowns in the d-zone and they quickly capitalized and I think three goals where they just found ways to throw pucks at the net that found their way to the back of the net."

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • UMass was out-shot, 46-13 on the night and went 0-for-4 on the power play, while Boston College was 0-for-5.
  • Iacobellis' assist, his team-leading 14th point of the season, marked his 52nd of his career to move him into 26th all-time in the UMass record book. He is now tied for 28th all-time in scoring as well with 80 points, the 21st player in the program's Division I era to reach the 80-point mark.
  • Chukarov's assist was his fifth of the season to match his freshman year total of five in 36 games. It marked his second in the past three contests for the Minutemen, as well.
  • Pigozzi's goal marks his second in the past three games after scoring his first career shorthanded tally vs. Boston University at Frozen Fenway on Jan. 8.
UP NEXT: UMass will next travel to Maine to face the Black Bears, Fri. and Sat., Jan. 27-28, in a Hockey East series. Friday's game is set for a 7:30 p.m. start.
