Raiders score pair of second half goals in two minute stretch to defeat Minutemen
HAMILTON, New York – A two-goal, two-minute stretch in the second half proved the difference maker as Colgate defeated the UMass men's soccer team 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. After a scoreless first half, the Raiders (2-0) notched goals in the 64th and 66th minutes to pick up the victory.
The Minutemen (0-2) will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 3 in its home-opener against Saint Peter's at Rudd Field. The game will be part of a doubleheader with the women's team and is slated for a 3 p.m. kickoff. Admission and parking are both free to all.
In Sunday's action, Jorge Becerra made a career-high nine saves to follow up his eight save performance on Friday at No. 6 Syracuse.
For the second consecutive match, the Minutemen held their opponent scoreless in the opening half of play. Midway through the second half, however, the Raiders were able to break open the contest.
In the 64th minute, Ethan Kutler was able to carry the ball down the left wing where he roofed a shot from a difficult angle that was nearly even with the goalline. Two minutes later, Kentaro Morrison lifted a high, curling strike from outside the 18-yard box that just tucked under the cross bar and a leaping Becerra.
The Raiders held a 22-to-7 advantage in shots for the match and a 5-to-0 edge in corners.
Ricky Brown made three saves in net for Colgate.
