AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts rowing competed in four races at the prestigious Henley Women's Regatta, in Henley on Thames, England, on Sunday to wrap its 2015-16 competition season. The trip marks significant momentum for the program, providing the Minutewomen with an opportunity to compete internationally for the first time since 2003. Competition included international club, collegiate, national team and Olympic athletes.
"This trip would not have been possible without the support of our program's alumni, friends and family," head coach Jim Dietz said. "Our student-athletes were left with a unique athletic experience, competing in duel-style races with top international and national crews, in addition to learning about the English culture and Henley-on-Thames area."
After winning her opening Elite 1x race against Limbrick of Tideway Scullers by several lengths of open water, senior Sam Kolovson fell to Wilson of Cambridge University WBC on Sunday.
Massachusetts' Elite 8+ (Kelsey Anderson, Daniella du Toit, Sam Wonderlin, Hannah White, Pippa Edwards, Abby Norwood, Courtney Edson, Nicole Destefano and Hadley Irvin) fell to Princeton, ranked No. 7 in American collegiate competition. The Minutewomen also faced the Tigers at the Princeton Chase last fall and in previous NCAA Championship competition.
Competing in their second race of the day, the Elite 4- crew of du Toit, Edwards, Norwood and Edson faced tough competition against a composite crew made of athletes from University of Nottingham and Mosely Rowing club, both from the UK. The UMass boat lost to the U.K. crew.
The Elite 4x boat of Krysten Menks, Zoe Hill, Grace Bundy and Allanah Rubi-Mooney fell to Leander Boat Club, comprised of two-time Olympian Debbie Flood (U.K., 4x), national team members and Olympic team hopefuls.
The Henley Women's Regatta (HWR) will be an opportunity for the UMass program to compete in every 4 years and we plan to fundraise a trip in 2020.
