UMass Baseball’s Jennings Named All-New England

AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts baseball senior co-captain John Jennings has been named to the NEIBA Division I All-New England Second Team, the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association announced on Wednesday. The award marks the first career honor for the catcher, who is the fifth Minuteman in the past six seasons to receive All-New England recognition.

The Newton, Mass., native was one of two UMass players to start all 45 games in 2016, including 40 behind the plate, and finished with a .298 batting average after reaching the 50-hit plateau for the first time in his career. Jennings posted the highest home runs total by a member of the Minutemen since 2011, belting nine this season to rank tied for sixth among the A-10 leaders. He finished fourth in the conference with a .540 slugging percentage, aided by a team-high 10 doubles and two triples. Jennings also paced UMass in RBI (32) and runs scored (30) in 2016, as well, and logged 14 multi-hit games and a team-high nine multi-RBI games.

In A-10 play, Jennings was 29-for-94 for a .309 average in 24 contests and logged six doubles and six home runs for a .564 slugging percentage. He scored 23 of the team’s 104 runs and drove in 15, while boasting a .994 fielding percentage with just one passed ball.

Jennings finished his UMass career with 60 RBI and 49 runs scored on 114 hits over 143 career games with 123 starts.
