Fairfield Nips UMass Baseball, 4-2

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - University of Massachusetts baseball pounded out 11 hits, but Fairfield came away with the victory on Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Minutemen, 4-2 at Alumni Diamond. The loss leaves UMass at 15-27, while the Stags improve to 27-23 on the year.

The Minutemen put a run on the board in the top of the first. After junior Dylan Morris reached with a one-out single up the middle, sophomore Hunter Carey dropped a double into the left field corner to bring Morris around to score the first run of the day.

Fairfield tied things up at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Drew Arciuolo led off with a single to right center, stole second and crossed the plate following two groundouts.

UMass pulled back in front, 2-1, in the seventh. Senior Vinny Scifo roped a leadoff double down the right field line and advanced to third on a ground ball by Morris before Carey picked up his second RBI of the afternoon on a fielder’s choice.

However, the Stags took the lead with one swing of the bat in the bottom half of the inning courtesy of a two-run home run by Mac Crispino. Fairfield then added an insurance run in the eighth with RBI single by Michael Conti that brought the score to 4-2.

Junior Mike Geannelis pitched a complete game for the Minutemen and took the loss (1-5). He let up four runs, three earned, on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Peter Horn collected the win (3-1) for Fairfield, working an inning of relief and surrendering one run on two hits. Aaron Howell logged a four-out save for the Stags, his fifth save of the season.

UMass will close out its 2016 campaign with a home series against George Mason, beginning on Thurs., May 19, at 3 p.m. at Earl Lorden Field.
