Minutewomen Race Six Boats on Dad Vail's First Day

PHILADELPHIA - University of Massachusetts rowing put forth a strong showing during its opening races of the 2016 Dad Vail Regatta Friday, with each of the team's six boats advancing to their respective semifinals. The squad balanced success across each boat's respective race, which included two first place finishes, a pair of second places, one third and a No. 4 spot.
The Varsity 8+ opened the day with a first place finish in its heat as it reached the line in 6:53.064, nearly 30 seconds in front of second place Case and trailing boats from George Tech, John Carroll and Sacred Heart. Its placement in the top two of its heat moved the Varsity 8+ into the semifinal round on Saturday.
Single (1x) competitor Caroline Garvey was the next Minutewoman on the water when she took second in her heat with a race time of 9:27.533. It guaranteed the freshman one of the six semifinal berths.
The Novice 4+ concluded morning competition for the Maroon and White with another second place spot. The Minutewomen (8:08.963) finished four second behind Virginia Tech and outpaced participants from Emory, Marquette and UMass Lowell.
The Junior Varsity 8+ boat added to the first place finishers with a time of 7:01.807 in its afternoon heat. The Maroon and White outpaced the remainder of the field by open water, with more than 16 seconds between the Minutewomen and second place Delaware.
The Varsity 4+ put forth a solid effort to advance to the semifinals on Saturday. UMass reached in 6:52.689, good for third place and less than two seconds off Middlebury in first (6:51.072) and Drexel in second (6:51.620). It guaranteed the Maroon and White one of the 18 semifinal slots.
The Pair (2-) entry concluded first day Minutewomen racing with its No. 4 placement in time trials. Hannah McCollough and Leanne Ondreicka combined for a time of 7:32.554, less than one second shy of third place Army (7:31.866).
