UMass’ Deveau Wins Holy Cross Heptathlon

WORCESTER, Mass. - University of Massachusetts women’s track and field sophomore Bridget Deveau took first place at the Holy Cross Heptathlon, which wrapped up on Thursday in Worcester, Mass., the Halifax, Nova Scotia native broke her own school record, finishing the competition with 4,894 points, while sophomore Julia Witt and freshman Charlotte Robison took fifth and sixth, respectively in the field of 10 athletes.
Deveau, who ended day one of the two-day meet in second, used first-place showings in long jump and javelin and took second in the 800m run to help propel her to victory. Deveau started off with a 17-foot, 10.25-inch leap in long jump to score 683 points and won javelin with a throw of 135 feet, 9 inches, good for 694 points. Her time of 2 minutes, 23.16 seconds in the 800m added 781 points to her total.
Witt placed fifth with 3,977 points and capped off the meet running 2 minutes, 31.89 seconds to fourth place in the 800m to collect 669 points. Robison landed sixth in the overall standings and opened day two of the meet with 609 points in long jump, taking fourth with a mark of 17 feet.
The rest of the Minutewomen will return to action this weekend at Princeton University for the two-day Larry Ellis Invitational on Fri. and Sat., Apr. 22-23.
