AMHERST, Mass. - Coming off a tough loss at Hofstra on Wednesday night, the UMass women's basketball team returns to the friendly confines of the Mullins Center on Saturday afternoon (2 p.m.) to host Bryant. The first 100 fans through the doors will receive a free #UniteTheMasses t-shirt, while those who cannot attend can watch the game on the A-10 Digital Network or listen on 91.1 FM WMUA.
The Minutewomen enter the game with a 4-5 overall record, but are 3-1 this year at the Mullins Center and have won six of the last seven home contests. Bryant is 4-4 overall coming off a 76-60 loss at Pittsburgh on Tuesday.
UMass is currently led in the scoring column by freshman Hailey Leidel who is averaging 16.1 points per game and 5.8 rebounds. The Brownstown, Mich., native is the No. 2 rookie scorer in the nation and ranks fourth overall in scoring in the Atlantic 10. The guard also leads the league in three-pointers made (21) and minutes played (38.3/game) while ranking second in steals (2.3/game).
Maggie Mulligan has continued her stellar play this year as one of the nation's most improved players. The junior ranks second nationally in double-doubles with eight this season - all consecutive. She trails Washington's Chantel Osahor by just one. With a 15.4 point scoring average, the center ranks fifth in the Atlantic 10 while leading the league in rebounding average (12.4). The Boston native also ranks second in blocked shots with 22 on the year.
Rounding out UMass' leaders are freshman guard Ryan Holder who is averaging 12.6 points per contest, 13th in the A-10, and junior guard Leah McDerment who is third in the league in assists (5.3/game). Holder ranks third in the A-10 in minutes play (37.7), while McDerment is just behind in fourth (37.4).
As a team, the Minutewomen feature the fifth-best scoring defense in the league allowing just 60.1 points per contest allowing opponents to hit just 34.8 percent of their shots (fourth-best in A-10).
Bryant is led by senior Alex Klein who is averaging 17.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. Also in double figures is junior Ivory Bailey who scores 13.4 points per outing.Â
UMass won last year's meeting, the first ever, in Smithfield thanks in part to Alyssa Lawrence's 20 points along with 14 from Mulligan and 11 from McDerment.
