THE LEAD: UConn netted a goal in each period to top Massachusetts hockey, 3-1, at the XL Center in Hartford on Friday night. Senior Steven Iacobellis brought the Minutemen within one late in the third before the Huskies sealed the result with an empty netter.

FIRST PERIOD:
UConn opened the scoring 7:38 into the contest with Benjamin Freeman putting home a rebound on an odd-man rush from Maxim Letunov and Miles Gendron. Â Sophomore Kurt Keats narrowly missed tying things up with 11 minutes to go in the frame as his shorthanded opportunity hit the post. The Minutemen ended the period with a flurry of chances on a late power play, but were unable to convert with the man advantage.

SECOND PERIOD:
The Huskies expanded their lead to 2-0 early in the second. Tage Thompson sent a blast past netminder Ryan Wischow from the top of the faceoff circles at the 3:40 mark. Sophomore Austin Plevy was denied by Adam Huska from close range with less than five minutes to play in the stanza to maintain the two-goal margin to preserve the score.

THIRD PERIOD:
UMass pulled to within one of UConn on a power play late in the third. Junior Jake Horton sent a pass ahead to Plevy on the wing, who found Iacobellis at the back post for the tally at 17:08. With Wischow off for an extra skater, Thompson added his second of the night with four seconds remaining.

- UMass out-shot the Huskies in the contest, 25-19, with 11 shots coming on the power play for the Minutemen, who went 1-for-6 with the man advantage. UMass held UConn to a 0-for-4 night on the power play.
- Iacobellis' goal marked his sixth point in the past five games (2g, 4a) and was his 75th point of his UMass career.
- Plevy's assist was his team-leading 11th point of the year. He has nine points (5g, 4a) in the past 11 games.
- Horton's assist marked his fourth of the year, tying a career high for a single season.
- Wischow finished with 16 saves for the Minutemen, while his counterpart, Huska, turned aside 24 for UConn.
