Women's Hoops Heads to Hofstra for Wednesday Tilt

Minutewomen back on the road for non-conference mid-week match-up.

AMHERST, Mass. - Following an early Atlantic 10 match-up on Sunday, the UMass women's basketball team returns to non-conference play on Wednesday night as the Minutewomen head to Hofstra (7 p.m.). The game will be carried live on 91.1 FM WMUA and streamed live on www.GoHofstra.com.

UMass (4-4, 0-1 A-10) is coming off a 66-55 loss to George Mason at the Mullins Center on Sunday afternoon. Despite trailing by as many as 18 in the third quarter, the Minutewomen were able to rally to cut the deficit to six points in the third quarter. Hailey Leidel led the Minutewomen with 16 points, while Maggie Mulligan had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Both Ryan Holder (14 points) and Leah McDerment (11 points) reached double figures in the game to round out the scoring leaders.

Leidel continues to lead UMass in scoring this year with a 16.9 point per game average. She is also the second-leading rebounder with 6.1 per night. Nationally, she is the second-leading freshman scorer just behind UNC Greensboro's Nadine Soliman who scores at a 17.3 point clip. The Brownstown, Mich., native ranks third overall in A-10 scoring and is the leading rookie scorer in the league. She also leads the A-10 in steals (2.6/game), three-pointers made (19) and minutes played (38.8/game) and ranks among the top-15 in assists (2.9) and free throw percentage (.889).

Mulligan has become one of the most improved players in the nation with a 15.4 point per game average and a 12.4 rebound per game average. Holder joins Leidel as one of the top A-10 rookies averaging 12.6 points per contest. With seven double-doubles, all consecutive, she ranks second in the NCAA behind Chantel Osahor of Washington. She also leads the A-10 in rebounding average, ranking third nationally, and in blocked shots (2.4/game). Her 15.4 point scoring average is sixth overall among league players while she also ranks among the top-15 in field goal percentage (.438), steals (1.5/game), and minutes played (34.2/game).

Joining Leidel and Mulligan in the A-10 rankings is Holder who ranks 14th in scoring average, 10th for blocked shots (1.3/game), and eighth in free throw percentage (.821). Rounding out UMass' leaders is McDerment who is third in the league for assists per game (5.3).

Hofstra (4-3) is led by Ashunae Durant who averages 15.4 points per game along with 11.3 rebounds. Krystal Luciano is just behind her with 9.4 points per contest. The Pride are coming off a 74-50 loss at Buffalo on Sunday afternoon where Luciano scored 13 points and Marianne Kalin had 10 points.

Following Wednesday night's game, UMass will return home to host Bryant at the Mullins Center on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. Fans in attendance will receive a free Unite The Masses t-shirt while supplies last.
