Hockey Falls to No. 12 Notre Dame, 3-0

THE BASICS:
RESULT: No. 12 Notre Dame 3, Massachusetts 0
LOCATION: Mullins Center (Amherst, Mass.)
RECORDS: Massachusetts (4-8-2, 2-6-1 HEA); No. 12 Notre Dame (8-6-2, 4-3-1 HEA)
THE LEAD: In what proved to be a closely-contested defensive battle, University of Massachusetts hockey was unable to solve goaltender Cal Petersen, falling to No. 12 Notre Dame 3-0 on Saturday night at the Mullins Center. The Minutemen come out of the weekend with a split in their Hockey East series vs. the Fighting Irish after pulling out a 5-4 win in Friday night's contest.
FIRST PERIOD:
Notre Dame opened the scoring in the final minute of first period. Andrew Oglevie put a rebound from Dennis Gilbert and Anders Bjork past Ryan Wischow from the slot with 42 ticks remaining on the clock.
SECOND PERIOD:
The Fighting Irish expanded its lead to 2-0 at the 4:01 mark of the second period. Evans blasted a slapshot from the right faceoff circle into the top left corner of the UMass net from Cam Morrison and Tony Bretzman. Sophomore Austin Plevy was hauled down on a breakaway with 12:37 to go in the frame, but the Minutemen were unable to convert on the ensuing power play and finished the period 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
THIRD PERIOD:
UMass had several more scoring chances in the third, a period that was played entirely at even strength until Wischow was pulled for the extra attacker in the final minute. Evans closed out the scoring for Notre Dame with an empty net goal from Joe Wegwerth and Cal Burke at 19:43.

UP NEXT: UMass will next travel to Hartford, Connecticut, to face UConn on Fri., Dec. 9, in a matchup that will be televised on ASN/NESN at 6:30 p.m.

- The Fighting Irish won 35 of 66 (53%) faceoffs in the contest. Sophomore Ryan Badger (13 for 26) and senior Steven Iacobellis (12 for 24) both won 50% of their draws for the Minutemen.
- In his fourth consecutive start, Wischow totaled 33 saves and is now 3-4-2 on the season. His counterpart, Petersen, improves to 8-6-2 and stopped all 22 shots he faced.
