Minutewomen Drop Seesaw Battle With Richmond
October 09, 2016 | Field Hockey
Spiders score two late goals to seal outcome
RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Massachusetts field hockey program rallied from down one goal on two occassions but was unable to rally late for the comeback win in a 4-2 loss at Richmond on Sunday. Anne Dijkstra and Grace Horgan scored for the Minutewomen while Sarah Hawkshaw added an assist. The loss moves the Minutewomen to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in Atlantic 10 games while the Spiders improve to 6-6 and 4-2.
Dijkstra erased Richmond's early 1-0 lead with her 11th-minute goal. Dijkstra scored on a redirection in front of the Richmond cage after Hawkshaw hit in a hard entry shot toward the center of the goal.
Richmond's Hannah Loos bumped the Spiders back in front, 2-1 only three minutes later, but the lead was short-lived. Horgan evened scoring at 2-2 at the 20-minute, 12-second mark of play, just under seven minutes after Loos' goal.
After the early scoring barrage from both sides, play settled into a back-and-forth tilt for possession, of which Richmond controlled the majority share en route to its 20-11 advantage in shots and 11-5 margin in corners.
The Spiders went ahead at the 59:16 mark, when Kelly Quinn scored on a penalty corner deflection. Emma Johansson added the fourth Richmond goal with seven minutes, 11 seconds to play.
The Minutewomen return home for their next contest, a Fri., Oct. 14 meeting with Davidson (3-10, 1-3) at the Gladchuk Sports Complex.
