Delario's Late Strike Secures Win Over Davidson

October 14, 2016 | Field Hockey

Senior forward scores with 8.7 seconds remaining in regulation for 3-2 victory

AMHERST, Massachusetts - University of Massachusetts field hockey senior forward Izzie Delario scored with 8.7 seconds to play and sent the Minutewomen to a 3-2 victory over Davidson at Gladchuk Field on Friday afternoon. For the win, Delario fielded a loose ball in the circle and pushed a shot into the right side of the cage for her eighth goal of the season.

Sarah Hawkshaw added a pair of goals for the Maroon and White, including her team-leading ninth of the season. Massachusetts improves to 8-6 overall and 4-1 in Atlantic 10 games wile Davidson drops to 3-12 and 1-5.

Lauren McFayden opened scoring in the third minute of the game. McFayden converted at the end of a transition play after the officials initially ruled a penalty corner for UMass before awarding possession to Davidson.

Hawkshaw responded immediately for Massachusetts. Hawkshaw gained control of play in the center of the Davidson circle and hammered in a reverse-stick shot only 38 second after McFayden's tally. The junior forward from Dublin, Ireland, added her second of the day in the 10th minute as she scored on another attempt from the center of the Wildcats' circle.

Davidson evened the contest at 2-2 through its first of three penalty corners. Katherine English capped the play with a shot inside the left side post.

Hawkshaw was inches away from a hat trick and the eventual game-winning goal with one minute, 39 seconds to play. Hawkshaw put a penalty corner shot on-target but Davidson's Lauren Gampper knocked it back off of the line to keep in play.

Massachusetts led in shots, 10-6 overall, including a 6-4 margin in on-target attempts. Penalty corners were even at 3-3. Bean Rodriguez had two stops for Davidson while Emily Hazard provided as many saves for the Minutewomen.
