Minutewomen Take Second At Beantown Challenge

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - University of Massachusetts women's track and field claimed a runner-up showing at the Beantown Challenge on Saturday at Harvard University in a field of 11 teams. Individual first-place showings by Bridget Deveau, Heather MacLean and Carly Zinner in their respective events contributed to the Minutewomen's 172 points on the day.

In the 800 meter run, UMass nabbed the top three spots. MacLean earned first with her 2 minute, 10.23-second performance, an ECAC and New England Championship-qualifying run, while Emilie Cowan was second at 2:14.68 and Mary Lavery was a close-third with her time of 2:14.87, both New England qualifiers.

In the mile run, Zinner broke the five-minute mark, coming across the line as the runner-up in the event at 4 minutes, 57.53-seconds. Her performance qualified her for the ECAC and New England Championships. Renee Capps came in eighth at 5:16.36.

In long jump, Deveau won the event with her 18 foot, 1-inch leap, a New England-qualifier, and Charlotte Robison took seventh at 16 feet, 1.75-inches.

The 3,000 meter run saw stellar performances from Minutewomen as Colleen Sands took second place at 9 minutes, 58.33-seconds, a New England qualifier. Freshman Alexa Livingstone was fourth at 10:15.39, qualifying for the New England Championships, as well. Natalie Mako claimed fifth with her 10:30.97 run and Molly McMahon earned seventh at 10:40.81.

Jada Lofgren-Anderson saw action in the 60 meter dash and qualified for the New England Championships. The freshman was fourth at 7.84-seconds and also saw action in the 200 meter run, placing sixth at 25.95-seconds. Melissa Beaupre scored in the 60 meter dash as well, finishing seventh at 7.94-seconds.

In the 60 meter hurdles, Brittany Green claimed sixth at 8.95-seconds. The finish qualified Green for the New England Championships.

In the 400 meter run, Elizabeth Gulino scored for UMass, placing fifth at 59.13-seconds.

The Minutewomen had two scorers in the 500 meter run. Olivia Weir claimed fifth at 1 minute, 17.84-seconds and Deveau was sixth at 1:17.94.

In the 4x880 yard relay, the UMass women's "A" team of Meg Rodowicz, Samantha Allen, Grace Bailly and Christine Davis took first at 9 minutes, 30.65-seconds. The "B" team of Zinner, Brook Hansel, Mary Lavery, and Renee Capps was third at 10 minutes, 40.40.

In the 4x440 yard relay, the UMass women's "A" team of Gulino, Beaupre, Cowan and MacLean placed first at 3 minutes, 54.63-seconds. The "B" team of Caroline Leung, Lofgren-Anderson, Weir, and Webb took third at 4:05.3.

Margaret Riseborough set the No. 5 all-time UMass program mark in weight throw while taking second place at the meet with her 50 foot, 7.25-inch throw, which qualified her for the New England Championships. Kelsey Crawford was third at 47 feet, 0.25-inch, Sara Wagner threw 46 feet, 3.25-inches to take fourth and Alexa Fearing was fifth at 44 feet, 11-inches.

In shot put, Crawford enjoyed a second-place finish and a New England-qualifying performance with a 43 foot, 5.75-inch toss and Riseborough was sixth at 40 feet, 2.75-inches.

In high jump, Julia Witt claimed fifth at 5 feet, 5-inches, a New England-qualifier.

Sarah Bierly earned third in pole vault at 10 feet, 10-inches. Kayla Rorke leapt 10 feet, 4-inches to claim fourth and Kelsey Barnes posted a seventh-place finish with a 9 foot, 10-inch jump.

The Minutewomen return to the track on Jan. 22 for the Joe Donahue Indoor Games. Competition kicks off Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Roxbury, Mass.
