Syracuse Stymies Women's Soccer 6-0 In Season Opener

AMHERST, Mass. - Alexis Koval netted two goals and added an assist as Syracuse defeated the UMass women's soccer team 6-0 in the season opener for both teams at Rudd Field on Friday afternoon. The Orange (1-0) scored three goals in each half and outshot the Minutewomen (0-1) 16-to-9 for the match.

In Friday's match-up, Syracuse opened the scoring in the first 10 minutes of play when Koval scored on a tipped cross just inside the goal box. The Orange tacked on a pair of goals at the 21:58 mark and 23:05 mark of the first half when Stephanie Skilton and Sheridan Street both scored, respectively.

The Orange were able to keep pressure on the UMass defense in the first half earning eight of their 10 corner kicks and outshooting the Minutewomen 8-to-3.

In the second half, Syracuse added another pair of quick goals when Alex Lamontagne scored at the 58:10 mark. That was followed two minutes later by a penalty kick goal from Koval.

The Orange closed out the scoring in the 81st minute when Maya Pitts was able to slip past the defense for a goal from six-yards out.

Danielle Kriscenski made four saves for UMass in the loss, while defender Jenny Scro was also credited with a save when she cleared a shot off the goal line. Courtney Brosnan earned the win for Syracuse making three saves.

UMass was able to sustain offensive pressure in the second half, but could not crack the Orange back line.
