June 26, 2015 | Men's Track & Field
AMHERST, Mass. - Two current UMass track & field student-athletes, Jay McMahon and Colleen Sands, and one alum, Lisa Wilson, will be in action at the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships and Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., this Saturday. Both McMahon and Sands will be competing in the Junior Nationals competition in the men's 3000m steeplechase and the women's 3000m, while 2010 graduate Wilson will be throwing in women's hammer.
McMahon, a native of Swansea, Mass., ran the steeplechase five times during his freshman campaign with the Minutemen in 2015, scoring in the event at the A-10 Championships (eighth), before posting a season-best 9:15.44 to place fifth at the New England Championships. He will run on Saturday in a field of 17 competitors at 8:17 p.m., Eastern.
Sands, who hails from Princeton, Mass., ran the mile and 3000m indoors during her first year with the Minutewomen and saw action in the 3000m, 5000m and the 3000m steeplechase outdoors in her rookie season. She ran a season-best 11:02.05 in the steeple at the Atlantic 10 Championships, good for fourth at the meet. Sands will take to the track on Saturday at 8:46 p.m., Eastern, and is one of 20 entries in the event.
Wilson, who was a standout thrower for the Minutewomen from 2006-10, has continued her throwing career since her graduation. She still currently holds five UMass records, the shot put and weight throw indoors, and the shot put, hammer and discus outdoors. Wilson will compete in a field of 18 in the hammer throw, which is set for Saturday at 3:15 p.m., Eastern.
