Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass baseball erased a 3-0 deficit, but Rhode Island managed to bring in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth, edging the Minutemen, 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. The loss leaves UMass at 14-24 overall, 10-10 in the Atlantic 10, while the Rams improve to 21-20-1 and 13-7 in league action.

URI took a 1-0 lead with a leadoff homer by Mike Sherburne in the top of the third and proceeded to add runs in the next two innings. Three straight one-out singles to begin the fourth by Chris Hess, Martin Taveras and Mike Corin yielded the Rams' second of the day, while another solo shot by Matt O'Neil in the fifth made it a 3-0 margin.

The Minutemen responded by taking two of the runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Junior John Jennings drew a one-out walk, while classmate Vinny Scifo followed with a double to left center. Redshirt senior Kyle Adie then drove in the pair with a double to right, closing the gap to 3-2.

UMass stranded runners in scoring position with less than two outs in the fifth, sixth and seventh before breaking through for the tying run in the bottom of the eighth. Redshirt senior Adam Picard led off the frame with a double to left center and went to third on a fly ball before crossing the plate on a pinch-hit single through the right side by sophomore Dylan Morris.

However, the Rams pulled back in front in the top of the ninth. O'Neil was hit by a pitch to open the inning before being lifted for a pinch runner, Mike Foley. Foley stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and then scored on another wild pitch with Tim Caputo at the plate.

Senior Andrew Grant worked 2.1 innings out of the bullpen and took the loss (1-5) as he allowed one run without surrendering a hit with two walks and five strikeouts. Brad Applin tossed 1.1 innings of relief en route to the win (2-0), letting up a pair of hits. Taso Stathopoulos recorded the final out in the ninth to collect his second save of the year.

Adie (3-for-4) and Scifo (3-for-4) combined for six of UMass' 10 hits in the contest with Adie logging two RBI. O'Neil finished 2-for-2 for URI with an RBI and a run scored, while Jordan Powell went 2-for-4.

The teams will play the rubber game of the weekend series tomorrow, May 10, at Noon on Earl Lorden Field. Prior to first pitch, UMass will honor its six seniors with a Senior Day ceremony.
