May 09, 2015 | Women's Track & Field
CAMBRIDGE, Mass - The UMass women's track and field squad is celebrating a record-breaking day following the conclusion of the New England Championship meet. Competition wrapped up Saturday with the Minutewomen in sixth in the team standings with 49.50 points. The squad is enjoying the fall of two New England records, Heather MacLean broke a 1987 record in the 800 meter run to be crowned New England Champion for a second straight year while the Minutewomen's 4x800 meter relay squad took their fourth consecutive victory to set a New England record.
MacLean set a personal record in the 800 meter run at 2 minutes, 6.45-seconds and the Gold medal-winning performance shattered a long-standing record last set in 1987. The time also improved upon her previous UMass program record.
The Minutewomen's 4x800 meter relay squad is celebrating its fourth consecutive victory at the New England Championships. The team of Courtney Neves, Katie Powers, Krista Webb, and MacLean together ran a time of 8 minutes, 56.54-seconds. It was enough to set a meet record and set the second all-time UMass program mark.
Two Minutewomen placed in the top-eight in triple jump. Becky Stoyle claimed second at 39 feet, 10.50-inches and Courtney Kromko took fourth at 38 feet, 7.50-inches. In pole vault, Sarah Bierly was eighth at 11 feet, 7.75-inches. The leap earned the fourth all-time UMass program mark in pole vault.
In shot put, Margaret Riseborough placed eighth at 42 feet, 03.25-inches to score for UMass.
The Minutewomen return to action Friday for the ECAC Championship, a three-day competition in Princeton, N.J. The first day of events is slated to begin May 15 at 10:00 a.m.
