Dad Vail Regatta Day One
Rowing Program Advances All Boats To Dad Vail Day Two

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Massachusetts rowing program advanced each of its entries to the second day of competition with strong performances across all Minutewomen boats at the Dad Vail Regatta Friday. Five boats took first in their opening heats on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, including the Pair, Varsity 4+, Novice 4+, Varsity 8+ and Second Varsity 8+.
The Varsity 4+ opened competition with a 7:33.029 finish to advance to the semifinals. Abigail Raichek, Hallie Dunlap, Sam Kolovson, Natalie Boisvert and Courtney Edson led the rest of the field by more than 18 seconds as the second place finishers from Cincinnati did not cross until 7:51.509.
Maggie Curran and Mia Bornstein continued the early morning success with first place in their pair heat. The Maroon and White duo reached the finish in 8:15.302 ahead of Drexel in 8:20.680 and moved along to the semifinals as a result.
The Varsity 8+ followed up Curran and Bornstein's efforts with a first place of its own. The boat, consisting of Heather Pekarovich, Lauren St. Pierre, Emily Mann, Marika Kopp, Pippa Edwards, Aiste Balciunaite, Nicole Destefano, Haley York and Allanah Rubi-Mooney outpaced Connecticut, Emory, Georgia and North Carolina during its five-team heat with a time of 6:46.947. The next boat, UConn, didn't cross until 6:53.987.
The Novice 4+ of Kelsey Anderson, Annecy Smith, Charlotte Bleiler, Emma Hibbard and Meghan Ouellette took the top spot during afternoon heats. The quintet ended in 8:13.931, which was more 20 seconds faster than the No. 2 finisher, Orange Coast.
The final first place for the Minutewomen went to the Second Varsity 8+ during the last race of the day for the squad. Haley Eovine, Rachel Boudreau, Sam Wonderlin, Katherine Armstrong, Hadley Irvin, Krysten Menks, Estefi Marti Malvido, Carly Zanatta and Grace Bundy earned a time of 7:24.915 to beat out Temple (7:35.479) for the top spot.
Marti Malvido also advanced to the finals in the 1x event with a time of 9:08.251 during her heat. It put Marti Malvido in third behind boats from Villanova (8:59.442) and Oklahoma City University (9:05.766).
The Novice 8+ also earned third during day one competition. Sofia Ordonez, Lauren Azuela, Keira Souza, Betsy Yang, Kayla Willey, Lauren McKim, Stephanie Giovenelli, Sonali Khanna and Michaela Bish finished their heat in 7:32.344 behind entrants from George Mason and Bucknell.
The Minutewomen conclude Dad Vail competition with day two of the regatta on Saturday, May 8.
