GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The University of Massachusetts rowing program opened racing at the 2015 NCAA Championships in Gold River, Calif., Friday when the Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ completed their respective morning heats and each competed in the afternoon repechage round.

All three entries earned fifth in their heats at the Sacramento State Aquatics Center. The Second Varsity 8+ tallied the highest UMass finish in repechage races at fifth while the Varsity 8+ secured sixth and the Varsity 4+ placed seventh.

The Varsity 8+ started racing for the Minutewomen in the fourth heat of V8+ competition. In lane five, Massachusetts reached the end in 6:58.226 for a fifth place finish. The boat of Heather Pekarovich, Lauren St. Pierre, Emily Mann, Marika Kopp, Pippa Edwards, Aiste Balciunaite, Nicole Destefano, Haley York and Allanah Rubi-Mooney moved to the afternoon repechage races with the performance.

The Second Varsity 8+ entry of Haley Eovine, Rachel Boudreau, Sam Wonderlin, Katherine Armstrong, Hadley Irvin, Krysten Menks, Zoe Hill, Natalie Boisvert and Grace Bundy also raced in its respective fourth heat and finished fifth in 7:00.375.

The Varsity 4+ closed out morning competition for the Minutewomen in the second of four event heats. The V4+ of Abigail Raichek, Hallie Dunlap, Mia Bornstein, Courtney Edson and Estefi Marti Malvido earned fifth with a time of 8:00.531 in their heat.

In the repechage round, the Varsity 8+ earned sixth in a time of 6:55.713 for placement into the C/D Semifinals Saturday morning.

The Minutewomen in the Second Varsity 8+ continued their day one competition in the repechage round as well and crossed the finish in 6:54.995 for fifth place.

The Varsity 4+ finish put the boat into the repechage round, where the Minutewoman quintet earned seventh racing in lane six as the squad reached the line in 7:58.417.

Saturday racing begins at 11:30 a.m. ET with the Varsity 8+ C/D semifinals.
