And They're Off!

Friday, May 15 the UMass Men's Track and Field squad embark for their next meet, the IC4A Championship.  The men will bring ten athletes who have qualified for the three day competition due to their impressive performances in their short but competitive season.  The Championship will span from Friday, May 15 through Sunday, May 17 and is slated to begin at 10:00 A.M.

UMass Men Claim 20th At New England Championship

The Minutemen claimed 20th at the New England Championships Saturday after two days of fierce competition.  The men's 4x800 meter relay squad claimed third place as Andrew Burke, Alexander Finestone, McNaughton and Russell Wells ran 7 minutes, 36.41 seconds to bronze.  In the steeplechase, McMahon was fifth at 9 minutes, 15.44-seconds.  In the field, Brett Davies claimed 8th place in discus throwing 141 feet, 7 inches.

Minutemen Earn Fifth At Atlantic 10 Championship

The UMass men took fifth at the Atlantic 10 Championship May 3 amidst a field of talented competitors. Leading the Minutemen's top-eight finishers, Benjamin Groleau won his first A-10 title in the 1,500 meter run and broke an Atlantic 10 record that had been untouched since 2006. Groleau took Gold in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 3 minutes, 48.43 seconds, a New England and IC4A-qualifying run. In addition to setting a new A-10 Championship record, it ranks as the fifth all-time mark in the UMass record book

Tavares took second with a 9 minute, 8.42-second New England and IC4A-qualifying performance. Nick Ingham and Greg Copeland had stellar performances in decathlon. Ingham finished third with 6,427 points and Copeland took fourth at 5,844 points. Ingham's score was a personal best improved his No. 4-ranking mark in the UMass record book. Kris Horn cleared a height of 6 feet, 6.25 inches, to claim fourth in the high jump.

UMass Men Take Third At Pre-Conference Meet

After the honoring of their eight seniors at the Senior Day celebrations and the dedication of their new scoreboard, the UMass Minutemen finished third at their own Pre-Conference Meet. Junior Ben Groleau took the lead, finishing first in the 1,500 meter run at 3 minutes, 54.08-seconds. Sophomore Cory Thomas came in second with a time of 3 minutes, 55.65 seconds. Junior Michael McNaughton ran the 800m in 1 minute, 53.35 seconds, good for first in the event and a New England qualifier. Freshman Austin Peters rounded out the Minutemen's individual champions, claiming the top spot in the 400m in 49.80 seconds. In the steeplechase, Jay McMahon was the runner up at 9 minutes, 33.23-seconds. Sophomore Brett Davies was the Minutemen's top performer in the field at the meet as his 137 feet, 10 inch-throw landed him second in the discus.

Minutemen Take Third At Holy Cross Invitational

The UMass men took third overall at the Holy Cross Invitational Saturday April 18 in Worcester, Mass. Several Minutemen competed at the Larry Ellis Invitational the day prior including Paolo Tavares who took 12thplace in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at 9 minutes, 9.66-seconds.

At the Holy Cross Turf Field and Hart Track, Peter Farlow took first in the 400 meter hurdles at 54.30-seconds. Cotto Logan took second in the 110 meter hurdles at 15.69-seconds. In the 200 meter hurdles, Youssef Elkorchi was third at 23.09-seconds.Andrew Burke as third in the 800 meter run at 1 minute, 54.86-seconds.Deion Arneaud finished first in triple jump at 44 feet, 4.75-inches.Brett Davies finished first in discus at 104 feet, 10.00-inches.

UMass Earns Second At Minuteman Invitational

The Minutemen took on their first home meet of the season at the Minuteman Invitational. The meet boasted some of the toughest regional competition including Northeastern, Central Connecticut, and Boston College. Highlights of the meet included Paolo Tavares' first place finish in the 5,000 meter run at 15 minutes, 28.61-seconds and Brett Davies 'win in shot put with a 50 foot, 11.50-inch toss.

John Burns took second place in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Burns ran 10 minutes, 5.61-seconds, just edging out the third place finisher.Jay McMahon finished close behind at 10 minutes, 11.45-seconds.Patrick Farnham was fourth in the 100 meter dash at 11.09-seconds, just shy of a New England qualifying time. Nicholas Gemino took silver in pole vault at 13 feet, 5.25-inches. Right behind was John Chuma in third at 13 feet, 5.25-inches.The men's 4x100 meter relay took third. Cory Adelson, Patrick Farnham, Peter Farlow, and Youssef Elkorchi together ran 43.40-seconds. The 4x400 meter relay "A" team of Deion Arneaud, Peter Farlow, Zack Grube, and Logan Cotto together ran 3 minutes, 26.33-seconds to take third.

UMass Takes On Yellow Jacket Invitational

Saturday, April 4the UMass men took on the Yellow Jacket Invitational at AIC in Springfield, Mass. Team efforts produced a sixth place finish at 55 points. A highlight of the day-long competition was Patrick Farnham, who took silver in the 100 meter dash. Farnham ran a time of 11.19-seconds to second place, Alexander Finestonetook bronze in the 800 meter run at 2 minutes, 1.27-seconds. In the 400 meter run, Austin Peters took fourth at 51.18-seconds. In field events, Greg Copeland captured bronze in pole vault with a 13 foot, 5.42-inch leap. Nicholas Gemino took fourth at 13 feet, 5.42-inches. The men's 4x100 meter relay of Adelson, Farnham, Farlow, and Elkorchi nabbed silver at 43.26-seconds.

Friday, April 3 the men's distance squad competed at the Sam Howell Invitational. Blake Croteau placed fourth in the 10,000 meter run at 31 minutes, 9.61-seconds, just short of an IC4A qualifying time. Paolo Tavares finished 11thin the 3,000 meter steeplechase at 9 minutes, 23.67-seconds, qualifying for the New England Championship meet.

A Look At The Outdoor Season

- The men's track and field team has become known as a team on the rise in the Atlantic 10 and in New England. The men return after a strong indoor showing marked by fierce competition and a sixth place finish at the Atlantic 10 meet.
- In the 2015 indoor championship season the Minutemen fought for twelve top-eight finishes in the Atlantic 10 and three top-eight finishes in New England.

Adam Bonfilio took fourth in the heptathlon, beating his own UMass second all-time program mark.

- Alexander Finestone, Stephen Ness, Michael Maldari, and Michael McNaughton's efforts in the 4x800 meter relay earned a sixth place finish.

Michael McNaughton ran a time of 1:52.50 in the 800 meter run to break a 27-year-old school record set by Bill Stewart in 1988 (1:52.58).
