Game 1 Highlights
AMHERST, Mass. - The Massachusetts softball team split a doubleheader with George Washington in its home opener at Sortino Field Friday afternoon.

UMass (7-16, 2-6 Atlantic 10) won the first game, 3-2, scoring the winning run on a wild pitch in the fifth inning, while GW (17-14, 1-5) used a 7-run second to cruise to a 9-0 win in game two. The teams are scheduled to play the rubber game of the series on Saturday at Noon. All children ages 12 and under can participate in an Easter egg hunt following the game.

For UMass, senior Quianna Diaz-Patterson entered the day ranked seventh in the country with a .508 batting average and led the Minutewomen with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate with a walk and the game-winning run in the early contest. She has hit safely in 22 of 23 games this season and has a 7-game hitting streak.

Lindsey Zenk had two hits and three sacrifice bunts on the day, while Bridget Lemire hit a 2-run home run in the first game to get the momentum in UMass' favor.

Game One

Caroline Raymond (5-9) struck out two and scattered seven hits as the Minutewomen claimed a 3-2 win in the first game.

Lemire's 2-run blast in the first staked UMass to a 2-0 lead. It was her fourth of the season as all four have come in the last seven games.

The Colonials tied the game at 2-2 after scoring a run in the fourth and another in the fifth.

UMass got more offensive production from its leader, Diaz-Patterson, to break the tie. She singled inside the bag at first to lead off the home-half of the fifth before moving to second on a sacrifice by Zenk and a Lemire ground out. She then came home when Sarah Costlow's (11-12) pitch found the backstop.

Game Two

GW came out and rode leadoff hitter Megan Linn. The second baseman had three hits in the game, including a leadoff single in the first and third that saw her score in each inning.

But it was the second inning that put the Colonials on top. GW scored seven runs on five hits and benefitted from a UMass error. The final five runs were unearned and came with two outs. Sam Dos Santos and Linn produced run-scoring doubles and were the only extra base hits in the game for the Colonials.

UMass' best scoring chance came in the fourth when it loaded the bases but a strike out ended that threat.

Megan Colleran (1-7) suffered the loss for the Minutewomen, allowing eight runs on nine hits in four innings.
