NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. - The UMass baseball team opened its Atlantic 10 series against George Washington with a 7-6 win before being edged in game two, 3-1, in the team's doubleheader on Friday at the New England Baseball Complex. Following the day's action, the Minutemen are 5-9 overall, 5-3 in the A-10, while the Colonials sit at 16-9 on the year and 5-2 in league action.

UMass began game one by scoring a run in its first turn at bat. Sophomore Bryce Maher drove a single through the left side, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice and came home on an RBI groundout by redshirt senior Adam Picard.

George Washington answered by plating three in the top of the second. Brandon Chapman singled to right to begin the frame, Ryan Xepoleas was hit by a pitch and Kevin Mahala followed with an RBI single up the middle that tied the score at 1-1. A sacrifice fly by Matt Cosentino and a sacrifice bunt by Eli Kashi then gave the Colonials a 3-1 advantage.

The Minutemen quickly countered in the bottom half of the inning, though. Junior Brandon Walsh led off with a homer to left and junior Vinny Scifo dropped a two-out single in left to set up an RBI double by Maher that tied the score at 3-3.

Redshirt senior Rob McLam scored the go-ahead run for UMass in the third, after reaching with the first of three straight hits by the Minutemen in the inning. Picard knocked in McLam and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Walsh that expanded the lead to 5-3.

Picard's two-run homer with one out in the fifth briefly gave UMass more breathing room, but GW countered with a two-run shot of its own by Xepoleas in the top of the sixth.

Trailing 7-5, the Colonials threatened to extend the game in the ninth. Cosentino and Andrew Selby opened the inning with a single and a double, respectively, while Kashi brought in Cosentino with a sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game.

A wild pitch landed Selby on third with just one out, but an outstanding catch by Scifo on a line drive and a strikeout from Walsh on the mound ended the threat.

Walsh pitched the ninth and earned his first save of the season, allowing one run on two hits. Senior Conor LeBlanc collected the win (2-2) after tossing eight innings in his start and letting up five runs on eight hits with no walks and one strikeout.

In game two, UMass once again managed to score first. Walsh led off the second with a single through the left side, advanced on a wild pitch and a sacrifice before coming in on a double play ball.

GW later tied the score at 1-1 with an unearned run in the sixth. Joey Bartosic began the inning with a single up the middle and later scored on an error with no outs and the bases loaded.

Though the Minutemen escaped the jam allowing no more than a run, the Colonials eventually pulled in front with one swing of the bat in the top of the eighth as Selby sent a two-run shot over the fence in right.

Despite another stellar outing on the mound, sophomore Ryan Moloney was hooked for the loss (2-2). Throwing his first career complete game, he allowed three runs, two earned, on nine hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Bobby LeWarne collected the win (5-2) for the Colonials as he limited UMass to one run on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts in his 7.1 innings on the hill. Eddie Muhl pitched a scoreless ninth without allowing a hit and walking one to pick up his 10th save of the season.

Adie finished the doubleheader a team-best 4-for-7 at the plate with a run scored, while Maher was 4-for-8 with a double an RBI and a run scored and Picard hit 3-for-7 with two extra base hits, four RBI and scored twice.

For GW, Chapman and Bobby Campbell both finished 3-for-7 at the plate over the pair of contests and Selby, Xepoleas and Kashi logged two RBI apiece.

The teams will complete their series on Sunday, April 5, with game three of the weekend slated for Noon at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Mass.
