NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. - Sophomore Dylan Morris launched his first career homer, but George Washington responded by scoring the next eight runs of the contest to top UMass baseball, 8-2 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 5-10 overall, 5-4 in the Atlantic 10, while the Colonials improve to 17-9 and 6-2 in conference action.
Morris' solo shot broke up a scoreless deadlock with two outs in the bottom of the third. However, GW responded with a home run of its own in its next turn at bat as Andrew Selby followed a leadoff single by Brandon Chapman with a two-run blast to right that put the Colonials in front, 2-1.
George Washington scored another pair of runs in the top of the fifth to push its advantage to 4-1, capitalizing on a UMass error. Eli Kashi legged out an infield single to open the frame and came in on an error. Joey Bartosic, who reached on the error, later crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Chapman.
Kashi and Bartosic later opened the Colonials half of the seventh with a single and a double, respectively, yielding the squad's fifth run, while Chapman's two-out double in the frame plated Bartosic to bring the score to 6-1.
Ryan Xepolas' leadoff home run in the eighth and a sacrifice fly by Bartosic completed the scoring for George Washington.
Sophomore Mike Geannelis, seeing his first game action since March 17, homered for the Minutemen in a pinch hit appearance with two out in the bottom of the ninth.
Senior Andrew Grant started on the mound for UMass and took the loss (0-3). He let up six runs, four earned, on seven hits over six innings with three walks and six strikeouts. Luke Olson registered the victory (1-0) in relief for the Colonials as he tossed 4.1 innings out of the bullpen and allowed one run on four hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
Six Minutemen combined for the squad's seven hits in the contest with sophomore Matt Bare leading the way with a 2-for-4 afternoon at the plate. Bartosic and Chapman paced George Washington's offense both finishing 3-for-3 with two RBI apiece.
UMass is slated to return to action on Tuesday afternoon, April 7, with a game at Siena scheduled for 3 p.m.
