April 29, 2015 | Baseball
AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass baseball team saw solid pitching efforts from Tim Cassidy and Evan Mackintosh, but were unable to solve Quinnipiac's hurlers, falling 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. Following the setback, the Minutemen are now 11-22 on the season, while the Bobcats level their record at 21-21.
Senior Paul Yanakopulos sent a double to the fence in left and advanced on a ground ball in the bottom of the first, UMass' lone runner to reach third on the day. Yanakopulos bounced a one-out single up the middle in the third, as well, accounting for two of the Minutemen's three hits in the contest and finishing 2-for-4.
Freshman Brett Evangelista provided the only other hit for UMass, a single up the middle in the fifth, but was picked off at first.
Quinnipiac scored all three of its runs in the top of the fourth. Scott Donaghue drew a leadoff walk, moved to third on a single through the right side by Matthew Batten and crossed the plate on an RBI single by Vincent Guglietti. An error on the play allowed Batten to come in, as well. Then, after Guglietti advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, Robert Pescitelli plated him with the Bobcats' third hit of the frame.
Cassidy was hooked for the loss (1-3) despite a quality start of eight innings, allowing just three runs on six hits with one walk and a career-high six strikeouts. For the Bobcats, Charlie Murray earned the win (2-1) as he scattered three hits over six shutout innings with one walk and four strikeouts. Robert Hitt retired all nine batters he faced, striking out three, over the final three innings to collect a save (1).
The Minutemen will continue their eight-game homestand with a pivotal Atlantic 10 series against Richmond this weekend. Game one against the Spiders is set for Friday, May 1, at 3 p.m.
