Women's Track Victorious At UMass Pre-Conference Meet

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass women's track and field squad celebrated Senior Day and the dedication of its new scoreboard with a victory at its UMass Pre-Conference meet on Saturday afternoon at the UMass Track & Field Complex. The Minutewomen took first out of eight teams with 178 points, bolstered by a dominant performance in the field events.
UMass competitors claimed the top spot in five of eight field events. In the long jump, the Minutewomen took five of the eight scoring places with senior Ashley Palmer winning the event with an ECAC and New England-qualifying leap of 18 feet five inches. Classmates Courney Kromko (17-10.25) and Camille Edwards (17-09.00) claimed second and fourth, respectively, while freshman Bridget Deveau and junior Meghan Patrolia followed in fifth (17-07.00) and seventh (16-07.25).
Senior Becky Stoyle led a trio of UMass scorers in the triple jump, taking first with an ECAC and New England-qualifying mark of 40-01.25. Kromko was third (37-06.00) and Palmer fourth (36-09.50).
Four Minutewomen put up points in the shot put. Sophomore Margaret Riseborough claimed the top spot with a mark of 43 feet, three inches, a New England qualifying distance. Junior Sara Wagner was third (38-11.50) and sophomore Nathalie Irmer (38-06.25) and junior Alexa Fearing (38-03.25) placed fifth and sixth.
Wagner and Riseborough scored in the hammer, as well, with Wagner winning the event with a throw of 153 feet, 2 inches. Riseborough took fifth with a mark of 134 feet, eight inches. Irmer (5th, 118-04), Wagner (6th, 116-07) and Riseborough (112-04) added points in the discus as well.
Junior Emma Robinson was UMass' fifth individual champion on the day with her New England-qualifying throw of 131 feet, four inches in the javelin. Deveau (124-01) and freshman Lucy Belt (116-00) scored as well, in sixth and eighth, respectively.
In the pole vault, sophomore Katherine Gabriele took fourth (11-00.75), followed by senior Rachel Busch and Sarah Bierly who tied for fifth, both clearing a height of 10 feet, 6.75 inches.
Rounding out the Minutewomen's scorers in the field events, freshman Julia Witt cleared 5 feet, 1.25 inches in the high jump to claim fifth.
UMass saw the bulk of its points scored on the track come in the 5000m as the Minutewomen placed six runners in the top-eight. Freshman led the way in second with a New England-qualifying time of 17 minutes, 58.67 seconds, followed by junior Molly McMahon (18:08.73) in third, senior Alexandra Purdue-Smithe (18:27.39) in fifth, senior Sarah Burke (18:54.53) in sixth, freshman Gracie Bailly (19:12.28) in seventh and freshman Samantha Allen (19:15.24) in eighth.
Palmer ran a 12.37 in the 100m, good for fifth and a New England qualifier. Deveau scored with her fourth-place finish and New England-qualifying time in the 400 hurdles, 1 minute, 5.21 seconds.
Senior Courtney Neves (fifth) and junior Carly Ziner (sixth) scored in the 800m with times of 2 minutes, 19.18 seconds and 2 minutes, 19.54 seconds, respectively.
Senior Rachel Hilliard claimed sixth in the 1500m in 4 minutes, 36.28 seconds and sophomore Brittany Green was seventh in the 100 hurdles in 14.78 seconds. Both times surpassed the New England qualifying marks.
In the 4x400m relay, UMass' "A" squad was the runner-up with a time of 4 minutes, 6.77 seconds.
The Minutewomen will be back in action next weekend, May 2-3, when the squad heads to Fairfax, Va., for the Atlantic 10 Championship.
