Minutemen Take Third At UMass Pre-Conference Meet

AMHERST, Mass. - On a day that saw the team honor its eight seniors and dedicate a new scoreboard, the UMass men's track and field squad claimed third at its own Pre-Conference meet on Saturday at the UMass Track & Field Complex. The Minutemen placed third in the team standings with 112.50 points, while Dartmouth won the meet with 166 points and Central Connecticut (118.50) was the runner-up.
UMass saw the bulk of its points come in the 1500m as junior Ben Groleau won the event in a New England-qualifying time of 3 minutes, 54.08 seconds. Sophomore Cory Thomas came in second with a time of 3 minutes, 55.65 seconds, while sophomore Paolo Tavares (3:59.34), freshman Adam Selsman (4:03.75) and sophomore Tyler Hagen (4:03.82) placed fourth, seventh and eighth, respectively.
Junior Michael McNaughton ran the 800m in 1 minute, 53.35 seconds, good for first in the event and a New England qualifier. Freshman Russell Wells scored as well, in eighth with a time of 1 minute, 55.64 seconds.
Freshman Austin Peters rounded out the Minutemen's individual champions, claiming the top spot in the 400m in 49.80 seconds.
In the steeplechase, freshman Jay McMahon was the runner up with a New England-qualifying time of 9 minutes, 33.23 seconds, while sophomore John Burns placed fourth in 9 minutes, 44.57 seconds.
Also scoring for UMass on the track were senior Patrick Farnham in fifth in the 100m (10.97), sophomore Adam Bonfilio (5th, 15.43) and junior Nick Ingham (7th, 15.89) in the 110 hurdles and junior Zack Grube (5th, 57.07) and freshman Logan Cotto (8th, 58.54) in the 400 hurdles. Bonfilio's performance in the 110 hurdles was a New England qualifier.
Sophomore Brett Davies was the Minutemen's top performer in the field at the meet as his 137 feet, 10 inch-throw landed him second in the discus. Classmate Deion Arneaud scored in both the long jump (20-05.00) and the triple jump (43-00.50), taking fourth and fifth, respectively.
Senior Greg Copeland placed fifth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 14 feet, 5.25 inches, while freshman John Chuma was eighth (13-05.25).
Ingham placed seventh in the high jump for his second scoring performance of the day with a height of 5 feet, 11.25 inches. In the javelin, Brendan Lloyd was sixth with a throw of 166 feet, 4 inches.
UMass' 4x400m relay (3:24.04) and 4x100m relay (43.10) claimed third and fourth, respectively.
The Minutemen next travel to the Atlantic 10 Championship, which will be held in Fairfax, Va., next Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3.
