Box Score

STORRS, Conn. - The UMass baseball team held a early lead at Connecticut on Tuesday afternoon, but saw the Huskies' offense come alive in the third and fourth in a 13-2 setback at J.O. Christian Field. Following the loss, the Minutemen are now 11-15 on the year, while UConn improves to 26-15 overall.

UMass opened the scoring with a run in the first as redshirt senior Kyle Adie bounced a two-out single up the middle, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single to left by redshirt senior Adam Picard.

The Minutemen held UConn off the board until the bottom of the third when the Huskies scored three runs with two outs on four hits in the frame to pull in front, 3-1.

In the top of the fourth, UMass took one of the runs back to close the gap to 3-2. Picard reached with a one-out single, went to third on a single to right center by sophomore Mike Geannelis and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by junior Brandon Walsh.

However, the Huskies broke the game open with a four-run bottom of the fourth, capped off by a three-run homer to right center by Bobby Melley.

Then in UConn's half of the fifth, a solo shot from Max McDowell brought the score to 8-2.

The Huskies went on to tack on four in the sixth and one in the eighth to complete the scoring.

Redshirt junior Tim Cassidy started on the mound for the Minutemen and took the loss (1-2) as he allowed 11 runs on 12 hits in five innings with three walks and three strikeouts. Andrew Zapata collected the victory (4-0) for Connecticut as he limited UMass to two runs on five hits in seven innings of work with no walks and four strikeouts.

For the Minutemen, Picard had two of the squad's five hits in the contest, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Melley (4-for-4) and McDowell (4-for-5) paced UConn's offense with four and three RBI, respectively.

UMass will be back in action tomorrow evening in the Beanpot Championship game vs. Boston College at Fenway Park. The game is scheduled to begin approximately 45 minutes following the conclusion of the 3 p.m. consolation game between Harvard and Northeastern.
