Two Silver Medals Highlight UMass Rowing Performance Saturday

BOSTON - In their final meet before the Atlantic 10 Championships, the UMass women's rowing team picked up a pair of silver medals in a four-team meet with Boston University, Northeastern, and Brown Saturday morning on the Charles River in Boston. In the five events that UMass competed in, the Brown Bears, ranked third in the nation in the CRCA/US Rowing Coaches polls entering the day, were victorious in each race, defeating the second place finisher by at least 10 seconds respectively.
The Minutewomen recorded second place finishes in the Varsity Four and Third Varsity Eight to highlight UMass' performance.
The Varsity Four boat, featuring Abigail Raichek (cox), Hallie Dunlap, Sam Kolovson, Natalie Boisvert, Courtney Edson placed at 7:33, behind only the Bears boat, which crossed at 7:15.
During their final event of the morning, the UMass Third Varsity Eight took home second by holding off both Northeastern and Boston University after the three boats finished within five seconds of each other. At 7:12, UMass placed two seconds ahead of the Huskies boat while the Terriers rounded out the event, coming in at 7:17. Brown took the event with a time of 6:44. Helping the Minutewomen earn a silver medal was Sofia Ordonez, Keira Souza, Alina Schmidt, Leah Hitchcock, Alisha Weinstein, Lindsey Brown, Estefi Marti Malvido, Elaina Falcone, and Bridget Burke.
In the Varsity Eight race, the Minutewomen locked up third place, crossing the finish line at 6:58. The boat of Heather Pekarovich, Lauren St. Pierre, Emily Mann, Marika Kopp, Pippa Edwards, Aiste Balciunaite, Nicole Destefano, Haley York, and Allanah Rubi-Mooney finished 15 behind the gold medalist team from Brown, who cruised past their opponents with a time of 6:42, while Northeastern slipped into second at 6:52.
In the day's two other events, the Second Varsity Eight boat placed third with a time of 6:58, behind Brown and Northeastern while the Varsity Four `B' and `C' boats recorded fourth and sixth place in the Second Varsity Four event respectively.

The Minutewomen will have two weeks off from competition before they head to Camden, New Jersey for the 2015 Atlantic 10 Championships. At last years A-10 Championship, UMass pulled ahead of Rhode Island by two points, 52-50, to earn their 14th conference title.
