Minutemen Take Third At Holy Cross Invitational

WORCESTOR, Mass - The UMass men finished third overall at the Holy Cross Invitational Saturday in Worcester, Mass. The competition followed the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton Friday, in which a few Minutemen competed. Paolo Tavares finished 12th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at 9 minutes, 9.66-seconds, an ECAC and New England-qualifying performance. Benjamin Groleau took 33rd in the 1,500 meter run at 3 minutes, 50.77-seconds, an ECAC and New England-qualifying performance. In the 800 meter run, Michael McNaughton took 54th at 1 minute, 54.02-seconds followed by Cory Thomas in 75th at 1 minute, 55.26-seconds.

The bulk of the Minutemen competed Saturday at Holy Cross. Highlights of the day's proceedings included several first place finishes from the UMass men. Peter Farlow took first in the 400 meter hurdles, Deion Arneaud grabbed top spot in triple jump, and Brett Davies took the lead in discus. Team efforts lead to a third place overall standing at 127 points.

Cotto Logan took second place in 110 meter hurdles at 15.69-seconds, a New England-qualifying performance. In the 100 meter dash, Patrick Farnham took fourth at 11.09-seconds. Peter Farlow and Corey Adelson rounded out the top-eight finishes in seventh and eighth at 11.30-seconds and 11.31-seconds, respectively.

In the 200 meter dash, Youssef Elkorchi was third at 23.09-seconds. Corey Adelson took seventh at 23.36-seconds. Peter Farlow took first place in 400 meter hurdles at 54.30-seconds, a New England-qualifying performance.

Andrew Burke and Russell Wells found success in the 800 meter run. Burke finished third at 1 minute, 54.86-seconds. Wells took fifth with a 1 minute, 56.08-second run.

Adam Selsman finished fifth in the 1,500 meter run at 4 minutes, 5.68-seconds. In the 5,000 meter run, Tyler Hagen took second at 15 minutes, 19.63-seconds. Jay McMahon took second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at 9 minutes, 44.45-seconds.

Two UMass 4x100 meter relays took top-eight positions. The `A' team took third with a 43.98-second performance. The `B' team was fourth at 45.05-seconds.

The Minutemen continued their success into the field competitions. Greg Copeland was second in pole vault at 15 feet, 0-inches, a New England-qualifying jump. John Chuma and Nicholas Gemino tied for fourth, each with a 13 foot, 6.25-inch leap.

In triple jump, Deion Arneaud nabbed top spot at 44 feet, 4.75 inches.

Brett Davies took first in discus at 140 feet, 10.00-inches. Davies also took second in shot put at 44 feet, 11.75-inches. Kris Horn took third at 11 feet, 11.75-inches.

Davies returned to the field for hammer throw, taking seventh with a 130 foot, 5.00-inch toss. Dana Pagliuca took fifth in javelin at 159 feet, 7.00-inches.

Next up for the Minutemen comes the Pre-Conference Meet, their last home meet of the season and their senior day. Competition is slated to begin April 25 at 11:00 AM on the UMass Track and Field Complex.
