April 12, 2015 | Softball
AMHERST, Mass. - The Massachusetts softball team allowed six runs in the second inning and left nine runners on base in a 6-0 loss to Fordham at Sortino Field Sunday.
The loss was the third straight for UMass (8-19, 3-9 Atlantic 10), which is scheduled to travel to Rhode Island (1-26, 0-11) on Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
Fordham put up four runs in the second on a Sydney Canessa grand slam, the second of the series for the Rams. Two Fordham batters reached via UMass errors - both involving the Rams' Michaelle Daubman. She led off the inning when her pop up to first was dropped by Bridget Lemire and was safe at third on a fielder's choice situation when Caroline Raymond's throw to Anna Kelley sailed high.
The Rams pushed two more across on Rachel Gillen's single up the middle that got just under the glove of a diving Gianna Hathaway.
UMass finished with seven hits - all singles, including two each from Lindsey Zenk and Ashton Wince. The Minutewomen had a baserunner in all seven innings, including two on in the first and sixth but was unable to get the big hit Sunday.
Fordham (21-16, 7-4) had eight hits and drew seven walks. Canessa, Gillen and Lindsay Mayer finished with two hits apiece.
Raymond (6-11) had two strikeouts in the complete game for UMass. Gillen (14-7) earned the win for the Rams after striking out four and allowing just five hits in four innings.
