UMass Baseball Earns Doubleheader Split With Bonnies

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass baseball team responded from a 4-3 game one loss by defeating St. Bonaventure, 9-5 in game two of the squads' doubleheader at Earl Lorden Field on Saturday afternoon. Following the split of the twin bill, the Minutemen sit at 7-11 overall, 6-5 in the Atlantic 10, while the Bonnies are now 12-10 on the year and 1-7 in conference action.
St. Bonaventure scored in its first turn at bat to take an early 1-0 lead in the second game of the day. Ted Dilts dropped a two-out double into the left field corner and moved to third on a wild pitch before Dylan Dunn drove him in with a single through the left side.
UMass countered with two-out hitting of its own in the bottom of the second to pull in front, 3-1. Redshirt senior Adam Picard was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and, after a pair of strikeouts, three straight hits and a passed ball put the Minutemen on the board. Sophomore Dylan Morris extended the frame with a bunt single, while junior Vinny Scifo and redshirt senior Kyle Adie followed with back-to-back doubles.
The Bonnies promptly took the runs back, though, in their next trip to the plate, regaining the lead, 4-3. A one-out double by Cole Peterson and a pair of walks with two down set up a two-run single by Tyler Bell, while Jonathan Diaz plated Dunn with an RBI single up the middle to put St. Bonaventure on top.
However, the Minutemen broke the game open with a five-run bottom of the third. Redshirt senior Rob McLam and sophomore Mike Geannelis reached via a hit by pitch and a walk, respectively, and moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Picard. Junior Brandon Walsh picked up an RBI while reaching on an error with McLam scoring on the play and Geannelis came in on an RBI groundout by sophomore Matt Bare. Following a walk to Morris, Scifo drove in Walsh with a single through the left side and Adie capped off the scoring in the inning with a two-run triple that made it an 8-4 margin.
The teams traded runs in the seventh for the only other scoring in the contest, a solo home run by Thad Johnson for the Bonnies, and an RBI single by Morris for UMass' ninth of the contest.
Sophomore Ryan Venditti earned his first career win for the Minutemen as he worked 3.2 innings out of the bullpen and allowed one run on three hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Starter Steven Klimek took the loss (2-4) for St. Bonaventure after letting up seven runs, four earned, on three hits in 2.2 innings on the mound with two walks and three strikeouts.
In game one, UMass started off the contest with a 3-0 advantage. Sophomore Bryce Maher led off the Minutemen's half of the first with a single down the right field line, while Adie followed with a single through the right side. McLam advanced the pair with a sacrifice bunt, while Maher scored on passed ball and Adie came in on a sacrifice fly by Picard.
McLam was hit by a pitch in the third, stole second, and Picard plated him with a two-out RBI single to right center.
The Bonnies took one of the runs back in the top of the sixth to cut their deficit to 3-1. Johnson led off with a double to right and later crossed the plate on an RBI single by Bell.
St. Bonaventure then rallied for three in the eighth to climb in front, 4-3. After the first three Bonnies reached via a pair of singles that sandwiched a hit by pitch, Dunn scored on a wild pitch, while a sacrifice fly by John Novenche scored Bradley Gresock for the tying run. Bell then crossed the plate for the would-be winning run on an error.
Junior Kevin Lacy was hooked for the loss (0-1) for UMass. He allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits in 1.1 innings of relief with one walk and one strikeout. Nate Grant logged the win (3-1) with one-third of an inning pitched for the Bonnies courtesy of a strikeout, while Johnson tossed the final two innings scoreless, allowed one hit and struck out one to collect his fifth save of the year.
Scifo and Adie finished the day's action 3-for-8 and 3-for-9 at the plate, respectively, Scifo with two RBI and two runs scored and Adie with three RBI and a run scored. Picard went 2-for-6 over the pair of contests two RBI and a run scored.
Johnson (4-for-9) logged a team-high four hits for St. Bonaventure in the doubleheader and Bell registered a squad-best three RBI.
The Minutemen and the Bonnies will meet on Sunday afternoon in the rubber game of the weekend series at Noon on Earl Lorden Field.
