Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. - A stellar start on the mound from junior Brandon Walsh and a clutch three-run double by sophomore Mike Geannelis along with two scoreless innings of relief helped carry UMass baseball to a 5-1 victory over St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. With the win, the Minutemen take the weekend series against the Bonnies and improve to 7-5 in the Atlantic 10, 8-11 overall, while St. Bonaventure falls to 1-7 in conference action and 12-11-2 overall.

After neither team managed a hit through the first two-and-a-half innings of play, UMass plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the third. Three straight two-out singles by redshirt senior Kyle Adie, senior Paul Yanakopulos and redshirt senior Rob McLam produced a 1-0 lead for the Minutemen.

Then in the bottom of the fifth, UMass saw more clutch two-out hitting result in runs. Junior Vinny Scifo started things off by missing a home run by inches, instead bouncing a double off the top of the fence in left with one down. A pair of two-out walks to Yanakopulos and McLam loaded the bases to set up a two-out, three-run double by Geannelis into the right field corner that increased the advantage to 4-0.

A pair of walks and two groundouts put St. Bonaventure on the board in the seventh as John Novenche plated Ted Dilts with a ball hit to second after Dilts reached on a free pass to begin the frame.

The Minutemen promptly took the run back, though, in the bottom half of the inning. Adie roped a leadoff double into right, was sacrificed over to third, and trotted home on an RBI double to right center by McLam.

In his first start of the season, Walsh limited the Bonnies to just one run and one hit over seven innings with four walks and seven strikeouts en route to the win (1-0). Geannelis finished out the contest on the mound for UMass with two scoreless innings of relief, letting up just two singles with a walk and two strikeouts.

St. Bonaventure starter Brandon Schlimm took the loss (1-2) as he surrendered four runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts in six innings of work.

Adie and McLam, both going 2-for-3 on the afternoon, combined for four of the Minutemen's eight hits. McLam registered two RBI and scored once, while Adie scored a pair of runs.

UMass will be back in action tomorrow, Monday, April 13, with its Beanpot First Round matchup against Harvard scheduled for 4 p.m. at Earl Lorden Field.
