WEST WINDSOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. - The University of Massachusetts rowing program partook in the first day of the Knecht Cup at Mercer Lake in West Windsor Township, New Jersey, Saturday.

Racing was suspended due to increasingly difficult wind conditions prior to the 9:20 a.m. scheduled start to the Women's Novice 4+ event. Weather conditions are being assessed throughout the day by the on-site officials and racing is tentatively scheduled to resume at 5:50 p.m. with the Women's Lightweight 8+ event.

The day began with all three UMass entries in the 2- advancing to the finals, scheduled for Sunday at 7:30 a.m. The `A' boat took first in its heat in 8:20.10, followed by the `C' crew just over six seconds later. In the second heat of the 2-, the `B' entry of placed first in 8:28.26, nearly 16 seconds before Rutgers Camden crossed in second.

The Varsity 4+ boat of Abigail Raichek, Natalie Boisvert, Courtney Edson, Hallie Dunlap and Sam Kolovson continued the early morning success on Saturday as the group placed second in the opening heat to advance to Sunday's medal round. Raichek, Boisvert, Edson, Dunlap and Kolovson reached the finish in 7:44.79 as they outraced Penn State by less than one second.

Sofia Ordonez, Lauren McKim, Devin Parziale, Lauren Azuela and Michaela Bish in the Second Varsity 4+ battled through windy conditions and white caps on Lake Mercer for another first place finish. UMass outpaced Philadelphia University for the top spot by almost six seconds and reached the end in 7:51.88.

Competition resumed in the evening with the Second Varsity 8+ and Varsity 8+ races, which the Minutewomen took first and second in, respectively. Haley Eovine, Rachel Boudreau, Sam Wonderlin, Katherine Armstrong, Hadley Irvin, Krysten Menks, Zoe Hill, Carly Zanatta and Grace Bundy raced to a 6:52.58 finish for the top spot in their Second Varsity 8+ heat. Heather Pekarovich, Lauren St. Pierre, Emily Mann, Marika Kopp, Pippa Edwards, Aiste Balciunaite, Nicole Destefano, Haley York and Allanah Rubi-Mooney concluded UMass' day one events in the Varsity 8+ as the group advanced to Sunday's grand final with a time of 6:44.38.

Racing at the Knecht Cup will conclude on Sunday, April 12. The Minutewomen start with a 7 a.m. Women's Varsity Pair race and end with the Women's Varsity 8+ at 7:30 p.m.
