UMass Races Past Connecticut In Three Events Thursday

AMHERST, Mass. - In their first home meet of the 2015 spring season, the Massachusetts rowing program defeated Connecticut in three of their fives events, cruising to victory in the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, and Varsity Four respectively.

In their two other events of the day, UMass fell to Connecticut in the Third Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Four races.

The Novice Eight boat, racing alongside the Third Varsity Eight boats from Connecticut and Massachusetts, placed second to the Huskies. The Massachusetts Third Varsity Eight boat placed third, finishing a distance of one seat behind the Novice Eight in the only event in which no official times were kept while the Second Varsity Four boat finished less than two seconds behind Connecticut in their corresponding race.

In the first event of the day, the Varsity Eight boat defeated Connecticut, crossing six seconds ahead with a time of 4:36.6. The Varsity Eight boat consisted of Heather Pekarovich (cox), Lauren St. Pierre, Emily Mann, Marika Kopp, Pippa Edwards, Aiste Balciunaite, Nicole Destefano, Haley York and Allanah Rubi-Mooney.

In both the Second Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Four events, UMass faced hefty competition, as the Minutewomen and Huskies finished within two seconds of eachother in both races as both teams each took one victory. The Second Varsity Eight placed first at 4:43.6 to Connecticut's 4:45.2, while the Second Varsity Four boat crossed second at 5:14.4, less than one half second behind the Huskies 2V4 `A' boat. The UConn 2V4 `B' also competed in the race, finishing with a time of 5:32.9.

UMass' largest margin of defeat came in the Varsity Four event as the Minutewomen finished at 5:16.7, nearly 15 seconds ahead of Connecticut's boat.

The Minutewomen will be back on the water Saturday, April 18 as they head to Boston for a dual meet with Boston University, Northeastern, and Brown University in their final race before UMass looks to defend their 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship title in Camden, New Jersey the weekend of May 2.
