Moloney Pitches UMass Baseball Past VCU, 3-2
March 28, 2015 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. - UMass baseball used a stellar pitching effort by sophomore Ryan Moloney and a three-run eighth to claim a 3-2 win at VCU on Saturday night at The Diamond. With the victory, the Minutemen level the weekend series against the Rams (14-11, 1-1 A-10) and improve to 4-1 in the Atlantic 10 and 4-6 overall.
After the squads battled through five scoreless innings, VCU broke the deadlock in the bottom of the sixth. Vimael Machin drew a leadoff walk, stole second, advanced to third on a balk and scored on a bunt single by Cody Acker that gave the Rams a 1-0 lead.
UMass responded, though, by climbing on top, 3-1, in the top of the eighth, scoring all three runs with two outs. Junior Vinny Scifo drew a walk that extended the inning and crossed the plate for the tying run following back-to-back singles by sophomore Bryce Maher and redshirt senior Kyle Adie. Redshirt senior Rob McLam then drove in the go-ahead runs in Maher and Adie with a two-RBI double to right.
The Rams closed the gap to 3-2 in the bottom half of the inning. Jimmy Kerrigan struck out to lead off the inning but reached on an error. Kerrigan moved to second on a one-out single up the middle by Machin, while a walk to Darian Carpenter loaded the bases. Acker then plated Kerrigan with a sacrifice fly, but Moloney induced another fly out off the bat of Walker Haymaker to end the threat.
Junior Evan Mackintosh entered for the Minutemen in the bottom of the ninth and promptly retired all three batters he faced, including one via a strikeout, to collect his first career save.
Moloney won his second straight start to improve to 2-1 on the season as he limited VCU to two runs, one earned, on five hits over eight innings of work with five walks and six strikeouts.
Reliever Daniel Concepcion took the loss (1-1) for the Rams. He let up three runs on six hits in three innings on the hill with one walk and three strikeouts.
Adie paced UMass' bats with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate with an RBI and a run scored, while six more Minutemen had one hit apiece as the squad finished with nine on the night.
For VCU, Machin had two of the team's five hits with a double and a run scored and Acker had both RBI for the Rams.
The teams will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow , March 29, at 1 p.m.
