UMass Baseball Drops Series Finale At VCU, 8-0

RICHMOND, Va. - After opening the game with three scoreless innings, UMass baseball let up a pair of runs in the fourth and four in the fifth and dropped the series finale at VCU, 8-0 on Sunday afternoon at The Diamond. Following the setback, the Minutemen sit at 4-7 overall and 4-2 in the Atlantic 10, while the Rams improve to 15-11 on the year and 2-1 in A-10 action.
UMass logged two of its three hits on the day in its first two turns at bat, leadoff singles by sophomores Bryce Maher and Dylan Morris in the first and second, respectively, but was unable to plate a run.
Vimael Machin opened up VCU's half of the fourth with a walk and moved to third on a pair of ground balls before scoring the first run of the contest on a two-out single to right by Jimmy Kerrigan. Kerrigan stole second and then came in for the Rams' second run on a double to right by Brett Hileman.
The Rams then broke the game open the following inning as a grand slam by Darian Carpenter pushed the advantage to 6-0. VCU went on to add two more runs in the contest, scoring in each of its next two trips to the plate.
Senior Andrew Grant started on the mound for the Minutemen and took the loss (0-2) after allowing seven runs on seven hits with five walks and four strikeouts over 5.1 innings of work.
Heath Dwyer registered the win (4-1) in his start for the Rams. He limited UMass to three hits, all singles, over seven innings with one walk and 10 strikeouts.
UMass will return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 1, when the squad will travel to the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Mass., to face Boston College in a 3 p.m. contest.
