RICHMOND, Va. - UMass opened its weekend series at VCU with a 16-3 setback on Friday night at The Diamond. Following the loss, the Minutemen sit at 3-6 overall, 3-1 in the Atlantic 10, while the Rams begin conference play at 1-0 and are now 14-10 overall.

After sending UMass down in order in the top of the first, VCU raced to a 4-0 lead, beginning the bottom of the inning with four straight singles. Jimmy Kerrigan capped off the frame with a two-run double.

The Rams continued the scoring with their fifth of the evening in the second inning and followed up with two more four-run innings in the third and fourth to push the score to 13-0.

The Minutemen ended the shutout bid, putting up three runs in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Matt Bare, freshman Hunter Carey and junior Vinny Scifo began the frame with three consecutive singles. Then with one away, redshirt senior Kyle Adie drove in Bare with an RBI single to left. Redshirt senior Rob McLam followed with a two-run single through the left side that plated Carey and Scifo.

VCU promptly responded with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning, though, and added its 16th and final run in the bottom of the seventh as the Rams finished the contest with 20 hits.

Senior Conor LeBlanc started on the mound for UMass and took the loss (1-2) as he let up 13 runs, 10 earned, on 15 hits with two walks and one strikeout over four innings. Freshmen Scott Hovey, Kevin Hassett and Bailey Train combined to work the final four innings with Train seeing his first collegiate action.

Jojo Howie earned the victory (2-3) for VCU, tossing seven innings and allowing three runs on nine hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.

Logan Farrar led the way for the Rams' hitters, going 5-for-6 at the plate with two RBI and three runs scored, while Matt Davis finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.

For the Minutemen, seven batters combined for the team's nine hits with Adie (3-for-4) and Scifo (2-for-3) both logging multi-hit efforts.

UMass and VCU will be back in action on Saturday night with game two slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. at The Diamond in Richmond, Va.
