UMass Baseball Rolls To 11-3 Win Over Dayton
March 21, 2015 | Baseball
DAYTON, Ohio - The UMass baseball team saw nine players combine for 17 hits and its pitchers strike out 12 as the squad rolled to an 11-3 win at Dayton on Saturday. With the win, the Minutemen clinched the series victory and improved to 2-5 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic 10, while the Flyers fall to 6-14 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
UMass set the tone of the day by scoring four runs on five hits in the top of the first. Freshman Brett Evangelista led off the game with a walk, moved to third on a single to center by redshirt senior Kyle Adie and scored on a sacrifice bunt by redshirt senior Rob McLam. Four consecutive singles by redshirt senior Adam Picard, junior Vinny Scifo, sophomore Matt Bare and junior Paul Yanakopulos pushed across the next three runs for the Minutemen with Scifo, Bare and Yanakopulos picking up the RBI.
In the top of the third, UMass added its fifth and sixth runs of the afternoon as freshman Hunter Carey drove in Scifo and Yanakopulos with a two RBI single to center.
However, Dayton took the runs right back in the bottom half. Three straight hits by Greg Rhude, Robbie Doring and Sergio Plasencia, a double and a pair of singles, brought in the Flyers' first run of the day. Doring then scored the second on a fielder's choice.
The Minutemen responded, though, with another pair in the top of the fourth. McLam reached with a one-out single to left and Picard drove him home with a double to right center before scoring on a wild pitch with two away.
Dayton added its third and final run of the day in the bottom of the sixth to bring the score to 8-3. Mitch Coughlin led off with a double to center, went to third on a wild pitch and came home on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Huesman.
UMass went on to score in each of its final three turns at bat. In the seventh, Adie plated Yanakopulos with a two-out single to left. Bare brought in Picard with a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Then in the ninth, Adie's double drove in Evangelista.
Sophomore Ryan Moloney limited the Flyers to three runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings on the mound to collect the win (1-1) with two walks and a career-high seven strikeouts. Evan Mackintosh tossed the final 2.1 innings hitless and fanned five, a career high for the junior, as well.
Starter Noah Buettgen (0-3) took the loss on the mound for Dayton as he allowed six runs on eight hits in three innings of work with two walk and five strikeouts.
Adie led UMass at the plate on the day with a 4-for-6 effort that included a double and two RBI. Picard went 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles, three runs scored and an RBI and Yanakopulos finished 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Bare and Carey both drove in two on the afternoon.
The teams will close out the weekend series with game three set for a noon first pitch in Dayton.
