Big Second Half Powers UMass Past Fordham, 78-72

BRONX, N.Y. - Trey Davis scored 26 points with four 3-pointers and Derrick Gordon had his first double-double in three seasons to lift Massachusetts to a 78-72 win over Fordham at Rose Hill Gymnasium Wednesday night.
UMass (13-9, 6-3 Atlantic 10) shot 42 percent and made seven 3-pointers, including 5-of-9 in the second half. It was the Minutemen's third-consecutive win and their fourth in five A-10 road contests.
Gordon finished with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting and a season-high 13 rebounds. Jabarie Hinds, from nearby Mt. Vernon, scored all 12 of his points in the second half.
UMass opened the second half on a 10-4 run with a pair of 3-pointers and a fast break layup by Davis sparking the run to pull even at 46-46.
A Jabarie Hinds' 3-pointer from the top of the key put UMass ahead 50-47, giving the visitors their first lead since 5-4. The margin grew to 60-49 with 9:36 to play as a result of a 1502 run.
The Rams made their largest run of the game, climbing back to within 62-60 with just over five minutes remaining.
UMass countered with six consecutive, including a fast break layup by Hinds and Cady Lalanne's 1,000th career point for a 68-62 lead with 2:52 on the clock. He became the 47th player in school history to achieve the milestone.
From there, Davis made all 10 free throw attempts to keep the Rams from cutting in into the margin.
UMass trailed for the majority of the first half, closing to three late in the period but Fordham got four free throws from Eric Paschall to go into the break with a 41-35 lead.
Fordham (5-15, 0-9 A-10) shot 38 percent and committed 10 turnovers that UMass converted into 16 points. Eric Paschall led the Rams with 17 points.
UMass will return home to play host to La Salle on Sunday afternoon. Tip-off at the Mullins Center is set for 4 p.m.
