Mastalerz Named Hockey East Co-Defensive Player Of The Week

AMHERST, Mass. - Massachusetts senior Steve Mastalerz has been named the Hockey East Co-Defensive Player of the Week, the League office announced on Monday. The award is the fifth for the goaltender in his career and first of the season.

This past weekend, Mastalerz logged back-to-back 40+ save performances, helping UMass to a weekend split with #12 Providence. On Saturday, Feb. 21, Senior Night for the Minutemen, Mastalerz backstopped UMass to a 2-1 overtime victory over the Friars with 42 saves, including turning aside a breakaway late in the third period, and was named the No. 2 Star of the Game. The North Andover, Mass., native was also named the No. 2 star the previous night after making 40 stops in a 3-2 overtime loss on the road at Providence.

For the weekend, the senior posted a 1.92 goals-against average and a .953 save percentage over 125:44. Since Jan. 2, he is 3-4-1 with a 3.12 GAA and a .919 save percentage.
