UMass Drops Cougar Classic Opener 11-6

Mount Pleasant, S.C. - A seven-run first inning from the College of Charleston erased an early deficit as the Cougars defeated Massachusetts 11-6 in the first game of the Cougar Classic Friday afternoon.
After a Cote Clark walk and a Tara Klee single in the top of the first, the Minutewomen got on the board with an RBI double from junior Taylor Carbone. Two batters later, sophomore Ashton Wince notched a double of her own down the left field line to score two more runs as UMass got out to an early 3-0 lead.
Charleston would quickly respond in the bottom half of the inning as the Cougars brought 13 batters to the plate on their way to taking an early 7-3 lead. After three singles in a row, Charleston's Chandler Frisbee doubled on the first pitch she saw to give the home team a 4-0 lead. Three miscues from UMass and another hit added an additional three runs for the Cougars after one.
The UMass offense would get a run back in the second as Tara Klee drew a bases loaded walk to bring the score within three runs.
With Charleston leading 9-4 in the sixth inning, UMass' Quianna Diaz-Patterson helped UMass chip away at the Cougar lead with a single through the left side to lead off the inning. On the next pitch, she would steal second base and come around to score when Clark's grounder to third base was overthrown.
After Charleston put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth, Quianna Diaz-Patterson would drive in Anna Kelley on a two-out double to the right field fence to bring the score within five runs, but the Minutewomen couldn't put together any more offense as the they dropped the Cougar Classic opener by a final score of 11-6.
Ashton Wince went 3-4 with 2 RBI's as UMass fell to 2-4 on the season.
The Minutewomen will next take the diamond Saturday morning when they face Bowling Green. First pitch is now scheduled for 10 a.m., instead of the original 11 a.m. start time.
