Rowing Takes Home Gold Medals At Head Of The Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The University of Massachusetts rowing program concluded participation in the Head of the Oklahoma on Sunday, October 4. Carly Zanatta, Sam Kolovson, Krysten Menks and Jill McGill represented the maroon and white and tallied a series of impressive wins, including four gold medals, six silver medals and three bronze medals over the two-days of competition.

Zanatta contributed to four first place wins and a second place finish at Head of the Oklahoma. The sophomore out of Ridgeway, Ontario defended her gold medals in the Open Lightweight 1x, the Open Lightweight 2x and the Collegiate 1x, recording first place victories in each race for the second straight year. Menks and Kolovson returned to the field of competition as well to defend their successes from the previous year in the Open 2x, the Open 2x 500m and the Collegiate 1x.

The four started the weekend with breakout performances in Open 1x competition. Kolovson finished third in the Open 1x with a time of 18:47.58, while lightweight rowers Zanatta, McGill and Menks dominated the field with first, second and fourth places finishes in the Open Lightweight 1x, respectively.

Later that afternoon, Menks and Kolovson teamed up for a second place finish in the Open 2x with a time of 17:33.60, and Zanatta and McGill finished the Open Lightweight 2x at 17:16.17 to take home a first place victory.

UMass continued to dominate competition in the Open 1x Grand Final where Menks and Kolovson finished second and fifth with times of 1:59.22 and 2:04.83, respectively. Zanatta and Menks closed out the day competing in the Open 2x 500m Grand Final. Zanatta posted a second place finished at 1:47.74 and Menks followed close behind in third place at 1:50.12.

Head Coach Jim Dietz also secured an impressive time in the Men’s Masters 1x E-J with an adjusted time of 17:04.17, good for second place in a field of 10 competitors.

UMass opened the second day of competition with a series of victories in the Collegiate 1x; Zanatta clinched the win with time of 18:59.93 with McGill following milliseconds behind at 19:00.59 for a second place finish. Kolovson claimed the third place spot at 19:18.29 while Menks rounded out the race for the maroon and white with the fifth place finish at 19:39.66.

The four Minutewomen rallied together for the final race of the weekend in the Women’s Open 4x. The quad crossed first in 16:06.36 before the team from Oklahoma City finished in 17:12.05.

UMass will return to competition next weekend for back-to-back races on Saturday and Sunday. The Minutewomen will first travel to Derby, Conn. for Head of the Housatonic on October 10 before returning to the Connecticut River to host their only regatta of the fall season in the Seven Sisters Sculling Regatta in Hadley, Mass. on October 11.
