LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Massachusetts field hockey was nipped by No. 9 Louisville as the Cardinals scored a late goal for a 1-0 decision over the Minutewomen at the Marshall Center in Louisville, Kentucky, Sunday afternoon. Sam Carlino had four saves between the pipes for the Maroon and White in the loss.
The sides battled back and forth in a scoreless game until the 64th minutes, when Nicole Woods notched the eventual game-winning goal for the Cards on an assist from Shannon Sloss. Woods took a pass from the top left of the circle in front of the cage for the tally.
The Minutewomen (6-5 overall) nearly took an early lead on Shauna Rankin-Byrne's on-target attempt six minutes, 29 seconds into play, but Cards goalie Ayeisha McFerran was there for the save. Just over 20 minutes later, Melanie Kreusch fired in the second and final shot on goal. Kreusch's penalty corner try was headed for the back of the cage, but McFerran preserved her clean sheet as she turned it aside at the 27:57 mark.
UMass totaled six shots during the game, two each from Sarah Hawkshaw and Rankin-Byrne as well as one from Kreusch and another by Allie Sabia, while Louisville attempted 10 against the Maroon and White defense. The Cardinals (7-4) also led in penalty corners, 9-3.
Massachusetts continues its four-game road swing with a trip through Pennsylvania to Lock Haven for a Friday, Oct. 9 game at 3 p.m. before a Sunday trip to Saint Francis for a 1 p.m. tilt.
