October 09, 2015 | Field Hockey
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Lock Haven scored once in each half and UMass field hockey was unable to answer on the offensive end as the Minutewomen faltered, 2-0, on the road at Charlotte E. Smith Field Friday afternoon. Melanie Kreusch provided three of the four shots attempted by the Maroon and White while Sam Carlino ended the game with four saves.
Lock Haven pushed ahead, 1-0 with a 13th-minute goal off the stick of Alyscia Smith, who flipped a close-range attempt inside the far post for the score. The Bald Eagles doubled their lead during the opening stages of the second half when Rachel Valentine knocked in a rebound try at the 37-minute, 54-second mark of competition.
The Minutewomen made a push to cut the deficit late on shots by Kreusch and Dijkstra. Kreusch followed up a Hailey Cockrum penalty corner insert with a strike 65:32 into the game, but her blast went wide of the cage. Dijkstra added the fourth and final UMass shot in the 67th minute, but she sent her lone attempt of the game wide as well.
Each side recorded three penalty corners while Lock Haven outshot Massachusetts, 8-4. The Minutewomen return to action with the conclusion of their Pennsylvania road trip at Saint Francis on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 3 p.m.
